While discussing ideas on the evolution with @svalver.bsky.social and wandering around wonderful Barcelona, I'm learning some architectural paleontology. Giant (pea-sized) foraminifera — Nummulites and some sea urchin spines. Provenance probably local Eocene «piedra de Gerona», España.

Another gorgeous #Nummulites #foraminifera #fossil specimen from the #Eocene —this one is Nummulites gizhensis from the Wadi Thamat Formation (Middle #Eocene: ~48–41 Ma). Yuge!!

I just had to buy this vintage brooch because it uses probably the most unexpected stone I have ever seen in jewellery - nummulitic limestone! It’s probably 1930s and the other stone used is marcasite #decorativestone

I wonder if this is the same Eocene age limestone that has all the giant nummulites in it? #Geology #Paleontology
Artists have always loved to sketch!

Sketch of a sparrow from Egypt dated c. 1479–1458 BC.

Some 3,500 years ago in Egypt, artists used flakes of limestone rather than paper sketchpads!

I've seen fossils in some remarkable places, but this takes the prize: the benthic foram Nummulites in the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza. These massive blocks were quarried from the Eocene Mokkatam Formation when a relictual population of woolly mammoths still lived on Wrangel Island.

Here's a juggernaut #Nummulites, an #Eocene large #benthic #foraminifera —note that this is ONE cell!! (also cool fact: the Pyramids in Egypt are built with limestone rocks that contain Nummulites #fossils)

It’s #RockinTuesday and I’m going to rock it with traces of long gone life. These are nummulites, large foraminifera (single-celled protozoans) from the Eocene epoch (about 56-34 million years ago). Almost beyond imagination.

Morphological trends in reticulate Nummulites across the Eocene–Oligocene transition
At the Eocene–Oligocene transition (EOT), c. 34.44–33.65 Ma, the Earth's climate shifted from ‘greenhouse’ to ‘icehouse’ conditions. This change coincides with the first continental ice growth on Ant...
