Site contained some older plantation woodland - including this amazing Black Poplar which had collapsed many decades ago, but had then resprouted and branches have become new stems, with the original stems becoming a nurse log supporting young Birch and Ash - a true Phoenix Tree 🌳

Her memory is undoubtedly a gift. Rest in power and peace, Joanna Macy.

Macy once wrote, "It is good to realize that falling apart is not such a bad thing. Indeed, it is as essential to transformation as the cracking of outgrown shells. Anxieties and doubts can be healthy and creative...because they permit new and original approaches to reality."
In Honor of Joanna Macy, 1929-2025
I write while staying in one of the great forests of British Columbia, a forest in which the inextricability of life from death is gorgeously evident. Several kinds of fern spring from this soil, some...

I'm revisiting friends' Second Brains / Digital Gardens / that kind of thing, and thought that may be what you used nurselog for. I know I liked a newsletter to it a while ago but didn't say much.

Look at this beauty! Larger than a horse’s hoof, growing on a fallen birch tree.

"We spend a long time in the trees, on a tree, by the river. We kiss, for lack of answers. I use their knife to carve FAG4DYKE into the wood. Which of us is which is a matter of opinion."

Let me introduce you to the ‘Green Dragon’. She’s a #NurseLog
on my hike, a tree that fell possibly 40-60 years ago, slowly breaking up into soil and now home to countless new creatures and plants. Tree seedlings taking root on top as well.

Trees never really die. Mythical dragons of the forest.

#MundyPark in Coquitlam, BC Canada is a 178 hectare park that was completely logged by 1920 so many of the trees there are over 100 years old. Numerous large stumps remain, some show damage from fires and many are nurse stumps supporting new life.

What’s changing with the Grasshopper Project?

*Diameter limits to safeguard the largest, oldest trees.
*Protections for cedar and Pacific yew.
*Dropped plans for two old-growth logging units.
*Reduced logging in three more units to prioritize mature forests.

Something is almost certainly going to eat this but the swamp log does have a new tree growing on it lately. Looks to be oak, which based on the species having its turn this year, probably red oak. (Yes, the trees keep a calendar that they all agree to abide to and take turns.) #plantsky #nurselog

When the swamp log fell, it rammed into a neighbor tree and maimed it severely. Neighbor tree grew roots from its wound and now the swamp log lives on in a way as a nurse log. #earthweek #treehugger #naturevideos #nurselog #deathlovers #timelinecleanse
