In Western Australia we have our own native Christmas tree Moodja / Nuytsia Floribunda .The vibrant colour represents sun heat & 🔥 in the Noongar season of 'Birak.'

Favourite time of year! The Moodjar are out! #Nuytsia floribunda, this large tree is part of one the 5 or so linages of plants that form Mistletoes, within the Santalales order, with this species in the #Loranthaceae family!

Which one? Nuytsia Floribunda (or Moodja in Noongar) is pretty impressive

And these are the weird fruit! These fruit of #Nuytsia are unlike the berries of their mistletoe cousins, using wind to disperse the single seeded fruit via three prominent wings around the fruit!

Merry Christmas from Western Australia! May your day be as bright as this stunning Moodjar-Nuytsia floribunda

I love Grevillea robusta and was just talking about this to my mum yesterday at a family lunch. In #SouthWest WA, our #Christmas is highlighted by the Nuytsia Floribunda, a parasitic tree. The local Noongar people call it the Moodjar, the flowers represent the spirits of the ancestors visiting.

And last, but nowhere near least, some non-sea slug sea slugs. (Some of which have shells so I’m cheating here too. Is there no end to this wild rule-breaking?) (6/7)

Nuytsia have flowers grouped in three, with the central flower showing a bisexual flower, and the two other Flowers being purely staminate, so each floret will produce a single winged fruit! the staminate flower still show a style but they are much smaller than the central flower

The Western Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia floribunda). These trees are a beautiful sight around the Albany area at the moment. My dad would warn us kids to, "Keep away from them. They're full of ants."

27) Nuytsia floribunda or Australian Christmas tree is a pretty tree with bright flowers. But it is a relative of the mistletoe, a known parasite. Christmas tree itself also parasitizes other plants. While it seems to be a normal tree, its roots are robbing everybody else blind underground.

Wishing you all a happy holiday and well-earned break!
On Wadandi Boodjar (South West Western Australia) the Moodjar tree (Nuytsia floribunda) is known to many as the ‘Christmas Tree’ because it flowers when the temperature rises and the day length increases - right around Christmas time.

Happy New Year everyone. Let's start 2025 by setting the bar really high. I'm trying to grow the famous WA Christmas tree (Nuytsia floribunda) from seed. Being a parasitic rooted tree it needs other plants to grow from (here buffalo grass & native violets to be hosts), #AustralianNativeBonsai
