“Sternum, chest” in Kuliak and Eastern Nilotic:

Kuliak: a common root for “sternum” in Ik and Nyangi:

The same root recurs in ENil (meaning “chest” except in Kjong, which is “sternum”)

Offhand I don’t have examples of it from outside of Nilotic (nyangi esim “firewood”?), so it seems easier to buy an inheritance story of its distribution than contact

Ehhh less conspiratorial than you! Just some more garden variety Hamitic stuff that was the inciting motivation for the first published data from Nyangi (Driberg 1932). Driberg studied with Seligman (published “The Races of Africa” in 1930) so the genealogy is pretty straightforward.

3 cont.) The Nilotic data is especially tricky for the intervocalic voicing hypothesis. If it’s not a chance lookalike with Kuliak (there’s loads of agricultural borrowing locally), then either these need to have been borrowed from Ik into Nilotic, or *r > s must have happened in nyangi or soo…
