Is a complex species in terms of range. Started heading north in the 1930s - 40s with little explanation. Also...
The migratory behaviour of the yellow- crowned night heron has changed with its expansion north: one subspecies (Nyctanassa violacea violacea) migrates to the northern limits of its range, moving north and west after breeding. Birds observed outside of the normal range are usually first-years or strays.

An adult with long neck typically folded in front. The large eyes are well adapted for their crepuscular and nocturnal habits. They have large swollen bills specialized for eating crabs.

The latest checklist removes the hyphen from "Night-Heron" to signal that they are not part of a monophyletic group. This is the West Coast and Caribbean subspecies "N. v. bancrofti" characterized by paler coloration, narrower dorsal streaks and thicker bill.
