Great description of an unusual and potentially devastating hazard associated with volcanoes. Also note the fascinating way in which limnic eruptions can be mitigated: by releasing gas before it accumulates, via fountains (USGS photo of Lake Nyos).

I have one huge reservation about this: CO2 is a heavier than air gas, and if there's a catastrophic leak it can asphyxiate people—as in the Lake Nyos disaster of 1986, where nearly 2000 people died due to a limnic eruption: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Nyos_disaster
