Fun Brett Banditelli origin story on the OCAW, Karen Silkwoods union
OCAW merged into PACE with the Paperworkers. PACE merged into the USWA. I worked at the USW (they dropped the A) and was working at the old PACE HQ and they were going to throw out an old ratty Paperworkers banner.

Anyway I own the Paperworkers banner that was in their HQ during the 90s.

OCAW filed suit with OSHA. Turns out if was part of a systemic policy for American Cyanamid.

The OCAW threatened litigation against the company. In the summer of 1974, Silkwood testified before the Atomic Energy Commission that safety standards had been violated when the company sped up the work.

Silkwood took to her new role with aplomb and found lots and lots of health and safety violations. This allowed the OCAW to directly challenge Kerr-McGee in a way that had not happened before.

These women were represented by the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Unions (OCAW), whose vice-president was the legendary Tony Mazzocchi.

In any case, Silkwood was freaked out and had also collected a ton of evidence against Kerr-McGee. She contacted a New York Times reporter. On November 13, she agreed to meet him and OCAW executive Steve Wodka in Oklahoma City, after work. She never made it.

The former OCAW (Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union) local in Paducah, Kentucky still had their charter from the Labor Party on the wall as recent as 15 years ago

That being said, the USW is being led by a Black woman whose career is rooted in POLICY and she understands the future
As @banditelli.org reminded me, oil workers in Texas were some of the most progressive folks in Texas. They were members of the CIO. We see this still in fossil fuel-heavy states. Even Joe Manchin, who didn't trust climate legislation, supported taxing the hell out of rich people.

I was a supervisor in an OCAW shop. I would have thought it was funny as long as you had hard hat, safety shoes and eye protection 🤷

We will beat them, but first we gotta recognize which side we’re really on, and which side they’re really on. In the words of OCAW International Union president Tony Mazzocchi, “The bosses have two parties. We need one of our own!”

@willonthehill.bsky.social my dad was chairman of the workman's committe for OCAW 4-23 for many, many years and served at a national level for several.💙

In order to win this labor dispute, the OCAW needed help from allies. Going back to the 1970s, it was the leader in creating relationships with the environmental movement.

While unionization in the Louisiana chemical corridor was low, the OCAW organized the Wyandotte Chemical Company that opened in Geismar, Louisiana in 1958. A Michigan-based company, it was used to unions and so did not particularly object when its workers chose to unionize.

A two-day conference on June 4-5 will officially unveil the Tony Mazzocchi Archive, featuring not just OCAW-related documents but a wide-ranging oral history project that captures the voices of workers influenced by the visionary leadership and pragmatic radicalism that Tony embodied.

Thank you very much. No matter what people think, everybody owes their wage, salary, commission etc. to unions. Companies will always try to pay as little as possible for any job. I, like you, feel blessed to have had a union job (OCAW, PACE & USW). Good luck to you.
