Experimentos com Lamprologus ocellatus mostram uma combinação de ações inatas, aprendizagem e adaptação à forma da concha utilizada como ninho. Uma concha vazia repousa na areia, e um pequeno peixe começa a modificar o lugar ao redor. Ele retira material, movimenta a estrutura e termina com a abertura exposta. O que antes era um objeto no fundo se transforma em um espaço de abrigo e reprodução. Pesquisadores investigaram esse comportamento em Lamprologus ocellatus, um ciclídeo originário do lago Tanganica. Nos testes com animais sem experiência anterior com conchas, a construção levou cerca de 12 horas no começo e aproximadamente quatro horas e meia na terceira sessão.

These photos feature ocellated chalcids (Chalcides ocellatus), miniature lizards from the skink family. Their tiny front legs, which they adorably press against their bodies or comically extend forward, evoke associations with the tiny arms of a Tyrannosaurus rex.
