On this day in 1903, Eldridge Johnson received US Patent No. 739,318 for a “Sound-record”. His invention concerned the paper label at the centre of the disc.

Recorded in the London area, an assault of "machine gun drums, shellburst cymbals... shouted vocals" and "pure musical testosterone."* And, vitally, it's by a Black quartet the year before the ODJB hit. Didn't chart.

Burns gives very little time & attention to the novelty jazz era, just a couple of minutes on the ODJB, it just doesn't fit his narrative & is generally a bit too silly for the story he's telling.

Who knew that Italy had its own trad jazz revival in the 1950s? The Milan College Jazz Society recorded 31 tracks between 1953 and 1956. Lots of ODJB covers. Session data online. Link in comments.

Well. To be fair, the Original Dixieland Jass Band did record in 1917 and those are widely considered the first jazz recordings, though I think it's debatable. But everything else is false. The ODJB didn't play with Black musicians. 1/2

It is true that almost nobody is even aware of novelty Ragtime, and that I'm not even sure that's its name - just absolutely zero interest in this with big names James Reese Europe and the ODJB bookending it, but it was definitely the style for a couple of years and some of it is pretty good.

Oh, I like the ODJB. I get why they are subject to much eye-rolling now, and Nick LaRocca was a racist and a fantasist, but I feel they are still an important act.
