#OGNs
If I won the lottery I would never ever say so out loud but you WOULD see a line of Dinotopia OGNs suddenly hit the market

As someone who’s published both comics/ogns through the direct market + novels through a lit imprint, I am going to go completely off-piste here and make a few observations that will probably piss some ppl off.

Reversal and Parasocial are 2 of my favorite OGNs of the last few years and ABSOLUTELY something you should read
You can also buy my books from a local indie comic shop and if you are in a mostly English-speaking country I can give you links to stores that will mail to you!

all-ages OGNS by all dudes, never change, comics, never change

*This is maybe more narrowly for OGNs, though, where you get a not-insignificant contingent of writers (and editors!!!) of kids’ books who think making a comic is totally the same thing. It’s not. It drives me completely nuts.

In September I will be open to reading new pitches for OGNs for Papercutz. Here are my requirements- 1. Be professional. 2. No witches, cats, bats, zombies, vampires, Scooby doo/Mystery Inc-style mystery gangs, or post apocalyptic stories. We also don’t generally do superheroes. 3. Be original.

I know if I were a comics publisher, I would probably be looking to convince somebody to greenlight a slate of Sinners OGNs or maybe beg Coogler to slap his name on a creator-owned imprint that he would be given full power over as a curator.

But "great white hope" mindset of the comics industry...

I seem to only write epic sprawling OGNs. This new one is going to be thick, too.

Great to see the two Galaxy OGNs on the shelves at Third Eye. If you haven't read these books yet, we def think ya should.

Plus, go listen to our latest episode with writer Jadzia Axelrod🔗🧵⬇️

trying not to be insanely bitter about this lol, i've put out two OGNs with a major publisher and never seen it on one of these things, when my books are often in the store!

I'm just focusing on that which I can control. My lunch order. The people I care about. Planet Coaster 2. Lettering two OGNs and a handful of Star Trek. Drawing strips again. Finding a muffin this morning.

Can't say what it is, but I finally got my first on-going gig (well, a several issue mini, but still), after a few years of OGNs and one-shots. Knowing that I'll have at least something to work on for an entire year is deeply comforting, actually, who knew.

One thing that I'm gonna say which is more than a little mean, sadly, is that when I was flipping through a random assortment of OGNs and collections from 2000-2026 a couple days ago, I found a lot of very nicely painted/colored pages that were narratively dead.

It was depressing.

One of the biggest gaps in the current publishing market is a lack of publishers willing to invest in fiction OGNs for adult readers (read: not bio comics) and I'm really excited to see something like this come together.
“23rd Street Books, the grown-up sister imprint of Macmillan’s eclectic graphic novel powerhouse, First Second Books, will launch next year with graphic novels from Gene Luen Yang, Damon Wayans Jr., Saul Williams, Ben Hatke, and more.”— Publisher’s Weekly

As a person who has written for Marvel and not DC, Marvel has willfully neglected libraries.
Every ALA, DC has a huge presence. They bring tons of people out and they push the mess out of a bunch of YA/MG OGNs and trades. Every librarian leaves with DC comics.
Marvel does not come.
Y'know a place where DC is kicking Marvel's entire ass?

The library.

Appropriate for Pride, I’ve recently read the Galaxy OGNs from DC

Which are incredible trans coming of age superhero stories!

Is This It by Steven Hyden is the 30th book I've read this year. Add the 17 comics collections/OGNs and I'm still 7 behind pace for 75 in 2026. I need to average 1 every 3.54 days to make it.

- More comics in places that arent the LCS
- More trades/ogns, less floppies
- Push accessibility on digital platforms
- Invest in longform stories

I think the entire DM comic industry still has a long way to go to break the stigma of superheroes/boys club 🤷‍♀️

So I guess this is what kills the Brubaker/Phillips OGNs then

it’s #NationalIllustrationDay AND my birthday? seems as good excuse as any to throw some bits on the timeline! (i’ve been VERY lucky this year. managed to get an agent, signed on for two OGNs, had a series launch with scout and worked with some absolute DREAM publishers-
