I’ve been inside TheRiviera Theatre many times, but never stood on the stage until now. Here’s the view. It’s open for tours this weekend during Open House Chicago #ohc2023. It’s a cool tour.

I don't know any of these people I saw at 320 South Canal yesterday during #OHC2023 but if any of them need cover art for an album, I've got it.

I still haven't had a chance to look at the Open House Chicago #OHC2023 list yet, but here are Geoffrey Baer's picks, with mostly my pics: interactive.wttw.com/playlist/202...

For #OHC2023 yesterday, I got to see the New Regal Theater, designed by John Eberson and opened in 1927. Every surface a work of art. That last pic is the ceiling lobby, astounding to contemplate.

Funded by Julius Rosenwald, the Wabash YMCA was not only the first Y in the city to admit Black people, it is also the birthplace of Negro History Week, later extended into Black History Month. Architect: Robert Berlin, 1913 #OHC2023

The unusual design of St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, which includes some incredible terra cotta ornament by Iannelli. Architect: Francis Barry Byrne, 1924 #OHC2023

The Avalon Regal, designed by atmospheric theatre king John Eberson in 1927. Today, a man with bright, twinkling eyes appeared next to me, pointed up at the ceiling & said “that used to have STARS” & then literally vanished before my eyes. Ghost not pictured. #OHC2023

The absolutely insane terra cotta showcase that is the Grand Ballroom. You don’t have to strain to find the various slippers & pumpkins in the original Cinderella themed decor—they will announce themselves. Architects: Loewenburg & Loewenburg, 1923 #OHC2023

The Hyde Park Union Church (originally Baptist). I am organ obsessed & spent a lot of time looking at these pipes, but there are also windows by Tiffany & other luminaries if that’s your thing. Architect: James Gamble Rogers, 1906 #OHC2023

The Hyde Park Bank Building, where—if you squint past the modern bank stuff from the 2004 reno—you’re left with an indisputably 1920s-style temple for your money. Architect: Karl Vitzthum and Co., 1929 #OHC2023

Originally 1st Presbyterian of Hyde Park when it was completed in 1889, this church boasts an incredible painted ceiling that guides the eye towards a massive dome & several enormous stained glass windows, the largest of which I fell in love with. Arch: Gregory Vigeant #OHC2023

Surreal moment walking into The Forum, which once hosted the likes of Nat King Cole, just as the live band kicked off one of his songs. We also got a look at what those 2 newly rediscovered 127 year old theatre backdrops look like. Architect: Samuel A. Treat, 1897 #OHC2023

First Church of Deliverance started its life as a hat factory, & was converted into a church in 1939 by Walter T Bailey, the 1st Black architect licensed in Illinois, & the church’s dynamic Reverend, Clarence H Cobbs. The distinctive towers were added in 1946. #OHC2023

Rosenwald Court Apts, commissioned by Julius Rosenwald in 1929 to provide decent, healthsome housing for folks arriving during the Great Migration. Restored in 2016, the enormous scale of the complex is difficult to take in. Original architect: Ernest A Grunsfeld Jr. #OHC2023

Church of the Holy Family; huge & dazzling in every conceivable way. Interesting to think that initial funding came through 5 & 10 cent donations from poor congregants. Many architects put in work here, but the interior & facade are attributed to John Van Osdel in 1860 #OHC2023

Saints Volodymyr & Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church. Symbology is huge here, with tons of iconography & even the shape of the building itself. Aerial views reveal that the church was constructed in the shape of a cross. Architect: Yaroslav Korsunsky, 1973 #OHC2023

Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. I was told that the incredible chandeliers flanking either side of that incredible dome came from the long ago demolished Paradise Theater, giving a hint into the opulence that movie palace once boasted. Architect: Peter Camburas, 1937 #OHC2023
