And for what? I estimate that since 2023, around $800bn in venture investments have gone to AI companies, with around $226bn going to Anthropic and OpenAI. Most AI companies have overinflated valuations that make an IPO or M&A impossible.

The continuous opex can only possibly make sense if you literally sever entire eng orgs. That is not happening, at least not actually due to "AI". And as for end users: software "upgrades" have been mostly hated for decades, yet I reckon they're somehow hated even more today.

It's increasingly certain that US subscription-based LLMs are financially doomed. People hype up open weight models though. I did some very simple math and, to run e.g. benchmark darling open-weight Kimi K3, the cost of entry is a quarter-million $ on the GPUs alone. Then you have opex.

5 months ago I went into a new role at work as an OPEx Coaching role from being a Team Manager for 5 years.
At first I was sceptical and unsure if it would be right for me.
At first I missed the ‘noise’ from the TM role.
I’m finally settled and really enjoying it! I do NOT miss it at all now!!

Losses from investment, depreciation, debt payments/interest expense, are all accounted for separate from OpEx.

LBs have not liked most of this, including that the P&L changes meant that LBs without pools lost funding on that basis - that's now been fixed to reflect actual opex for each pool not averaged across regional.

I guess the release new models constantly, so they could be piling it into capital. Would also let them pass it off as Dev cost, which looks way more attractive than bleeding out their eyeballs in opex.

I have been telling people for a couple years now that datacenter owners dream is tenants who lease space and don't use it, which is why they push backup colo space so hard, it's systems that are idle like 99% of the time. AI companies opex demands are crushing.

These data centers are financial poison even if you bought them cheap. The returns are awful, the debt is toxic, the ongoing opex is nasty because of the cost of cooling and the power demands, and 30% gross margins requires near-perfect conditions and constant revenue for 5+ years.
