A large basaltic mini-island just off the coast of Cape Meares sits in the Pacific Ocean on the northern Oregon coast. It’s dark with seaweed and probably mussels along the water’s edge, and then streaked with gray, brownish green and white going up the sides. On the rugged, domed top, hundreds of sea birds like cormorants tend their nests. You can even hear their calls above the wind. Dark green Sitka spruce boughs poke out from the right and left sides of the picture from where I’m taking the shot on the mainland. The ambient light is cloudy.

This is a beach scene. White, and blueish-gray clouds streak from left to right across a bright blue sky. The Pacific Ocean rolls in from the left, and a pool of bluish green sea water stranded at low tide ripples across the bottom with a strip of sand rolling from the right. Dark green forested, black, rocky headlands meet the white-capped waves in the distance on the horizon. The wind was whipping hard and this was not a warm day on the Oregon Coast. I kinda love it that way, though- Needing a jacket in July. Classic.

A great blue heron struts away, out of one tide pool and into another in the early morning light. To me it looks like it’s leaving the scene after stealing a fish, and it’s trying to be all nonchalant. Lava rocks covered in various types of seaweed create a rich environment of tide pools full of life at Seal Rock on the central Oregon Coast. I think this individual must live here because we always see a great blue heron in this same area when we come.

A pale, sea green tangle of stringy lace lichen hangs from a stick in a spruce (maybe?) tree. It has these lacy, filigree-like “leaves” coming off of a central stem. I think this is my new favorite lichen species. It really likes growing on the Oregon Coast!

A natural monochrome shot of rounded, black and gray basaltic cobble rocks on the Cobble Beach at Yaquina Head along the Oregon Coast. A bed of larger stones is on the bottom, and the waves have arranged a line of smaller rocks in a line to fill the curved gaps between the bigger rocks. There are, very likely, tiny crabs hiding underneath these rocks.

A tiny striped shore crab, about 3 centimeters across, is jammed into a crack in the basaltic rocks on the ocean side of Proposal Rock on the beach at Neskowin State Park along the Oregon Coast. Its eyes are black, its claw tips are kind of lavender, but turn a mottled spring green and maroon as they go up to the rest of its body, which is also those colors. A couple of cream-colored barnacles are attached to the rock on either side, as well as some very tiny baby barnacles growing on the “roof” of this rock crevice.

A dense fog above the Pacific Ocean lifts just enough for the viewer to see a black basaltic headland and several sharp, black, chunky sea stacks jutting out into the sea, indicating that the headland used to be longer, but the waves have had their way with the rest of it over the centuries. White foam collects around the rocks, and the dark blue water has a rough texture.

Earthy, distinct layers of dark brown basaltic rock (in varying shades) that took eons to build form headland cliffs that jut out into the greenish gray Pacific Ocean. A shallow dollop of lighter brown sandstone sits on the top of the main cliff, and the tops of the cliffs are covered in trees - mainly Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, and coastal pine, if I’m not mistaken. A blanket of fog obscures some of the trees on the cliff. In the lower foreground, dark green bushes and grasses decorate the cliff side I’m taking the picture from. This is at Cape Meares along the Oregon Coast. Imagine, if you will, the sounds of the waves crashing into the rocks, the wind, and numerous nesting sea birds to go along with it.

The Octopus Tree, located on Cape Meares in Tillamook County along the Oregon Coast truly looks like a giant octopus with its arms flowing up out of the green grass towards the cloudy sky. From this view, it has 7 trunks rising up, bedecked with bushy green needles at the top. It’s dark brown trunk is covered in moss and lichen. It occupies a small, fenced clearing in the forest, with a sign telling people to protect the tree by staying outside of the fence - a plea ignored by some, unfortunately.

The dark blue Pacific Ocean meets the black-green forests and basaltic rock of the Yaquina Head along the central Oregon Coast. Pale lavender gray fog banks hover around the horizon, and pale blue sky sits above it all. Hints of White Sea foam and sun glitter play on the surface of the ocean, and I think that wedge of black rock in the middle of the water is Otter Rock. This view is from Cape Foulweather, one of my very favorite places. It’s a high overlook, and one time, many years ago, I looked down into the water below and saw an actual gray whale floating and chilling just under the surface of the water below. Unforgettable experience that I needed during a very hard time in my life.

A light blue, black and orange variegated meadowhawk dragonfly we rescued from the waves of the Pacific Ocean. My kid is cradling it in his hand. Its wings were stuck together and it was covered in sand. We walked the injured dragonfly back to our hotel and very gently washed it off and helped it dry out and relax and recover in safety. After about 90 minutes of first aid and rest while clutching my kid’s finger, this adorable variegated meadowhawk dragonfly took off again into the sky. Super happy day.
