Light My Fire

Low sun turns a row of fins into a gradient, yellow to red. The one dark fin in the middle is my favorite part. More buildings should be this much fun.
#EastCoastKin #Photography #Leica #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited

A vertical photograph of a curved building facade lined with tall, narrow fins that stand out from the wall like open slats. Left to right, the fins shift from mustard yellow to bright orange to saturated red, ending in a broad red panel that fills the right edge. Low sun rakes in from the left, lighting one face of each fin and dropping the other into shadow, so every fin splits into a bright strip and a dark one. One fin near the center is almost black maroon. A dark curved ceiling sweeps across the top left. At the bottom left, a gray sidewalk is cut by angular patches of sunlight and shadow that step toward the viewer, and a charcoal base runs along the foot of the fins.

The image works as a study in repetition and gradient. Each fin is a single bar of color, and the shift in hue gives the frame a left-to-right pulse, from pale yellow to heat at the red end. The hard side light is the real subject: it turns flat paint into alternating planes of saturated color and near black, and the angled sidewalk shadows echo the vertical rhythm in another direction. It sits close to hard-edge abstraction, with the architecture supplying structure and the light supplying drama.

Technicolor™ tunnel.

#Photography #UrbanPhotography #StreetPhotography

Photo on the inside of a covered footbridge. The interior consists of multicoloured panels in the form of an elongated hexagon and the point of view is towards one of the open ends, towards which all the lines in the tunnel converge. Near the end a small, solitary figure can be seen walking towards the camera, her head tilted upwards to look at the ceiling.

Día de los Muertos in Denver

#EastCoastKin #Photography #Stunday #Fuji #PhotographersofBlueSky #PhotographersUnited #AlphabetChallenge #WeekRforReligion #ColorADay #OrangeSun

A young girl stands in a portrait-format frame, dressed as a Catrina for Día de los Muertos. Her face is painted white like a sugar skull, with dark eye circles, a black nose, a stitched line across the mouth, and red and black rhinestones. Her expression is neutral and she looks straight at the camera. She wears a wide round hat of pink-red glitter ringed with dark feathers like a halo, long straight brown hair, a sheer black veil, and a red bead necklace over black lace. She holds a large bouquet of maroon silk flowers, orange and yellow marigolds and a pale yellow dahlia, with a black feather boa and a skeleton-gloved hand among them. Behind her are walls of red, orange and pink paper flowers, a red drape, and a strip of purple at upper right.

The black costume reads as one dense shape against a field of analogous reds and oranges, which separates the figure from the background. The bouquet and paper flowers are the loudest elements, but the white painted face is the brightest point in the frame, and the direct stare holds the eye there. Soft front light and shallow depth of field turn the backdrop into color and texture. The marigolds and paper flowers echo ofrenda altars, and her stillness sets this apart from a festival snapshot.

I think I posted this before, but I thought it a perfect example of this week's #ArchForma theme: #OTTColourTexture.
