Until she met Rowan, Ainsel didn't have anyone to speak to anyway, and she was perfectly happy with that. Honest.

Rowan, on the other hand, would have to be stapled to the floor to stay indoors for longer than she absolutely has to.

“Don’t just stand there, Karl!” Marie had already shucked her backpack and trousers, her pale legs shockingly white against the deep greens and browns of the bog. He followed suit, dropping his backpack and pulling his shirt over his head as he eyed up the woman. She didn’t look too deep; hopefully he and Marie could human chain her back out to solid ground. “Help her first, then the horse if we can?” He muttered, bending down next to her as he pulled off shoes and socks. Marie shook her head slightly. “There’s no saving the horse, it’s in too deep and we don’t know how long it’s been there. By the looks of them both, too long; if we’d gotten to them at the moment they fell in, maybe we’d have a chance of saving them both, but now…” she trailed off, and Karl nodded sadly. He didn’t like it any more than she did, but she was the farmer, the vet, the impromptu doctor; he didn’t argue. The mystery woman was not so gracious.

Ainsel’s head snapped up, and she regarded Rowan with a level glare. “‘More open-minded?’” She interrupted, voice rising in pitch. “If I’d been any more open-minded, my brain would have fallen out. Not that you’d know what a brain looks like, your skull’s too full of gunpowder and stuffing to leave any room for critical thinking.” “You’re not drinking your coffee,” Rowan took a slurp from her own mug, using the action to stop herself openly gaping at her impromptu guest. She’d thought the blonde had been rude out in the field, but here in the safety of civilisation she was somehow even more hostile. Ainsel glared at the mug in front of her, making no move to touch it. “Freely given?” “Okay, what the actual fuck is wrong with you?” Rowan snapped. “Nobody asks those questions any more. ‘Ainsel?’ ‘Freely given?’ There haven’t been any sightings for centuries, not since the War ended, so why are you treating everyone and everything like it’s some Fae trap?” “What the fuck is wrong with me?” Ainsel sat up a little straighter, attention shifting from the mug back to Rowan. “What the fuck is wrong with you? Trying to close a breach with explosives, especially before you wait to see what’s even come through is wildly irresponsible and incredibly dangerous!” “You were out there, too! Besides, I didn’t see you offering any suggestions on how to close the thing.” “You didn’t exactly give me a chance to! You just rocked up, said you were IRON—” “I never said—” “—fucking implied then, I don’t give a shit—and then fired a rocket launcher—” “Grenade launcher—” “I don’t fucking care!”

'You didn’t bring it with you, it’s in the locked tin, so it’s something else and your brain is playing tr—' As her hand took hold of it and drew it out of her pocket, the hollow pit in her stomach opened into a yawning chasm of dread. Clutched in her hand, making her fingers looks clumsy and huge just by proximity, lay a tiny embroidery-sized skein of thread, so slim and fine that when unwound, couldn’t be seen at all unless the sun hit it just right. 'How many times have I tried to be rid of you?'
