we spent months discussing Obama2012/Trump2016 voters and trying to diagnose what motivates them when the obvious answer was that they were just not paying that much attention
My take, which has been the same since roughly 2004, is that voters **are** consistently to the left of the politicians they vote for, but they’re also stupid toddlers who are wrong about a lot of stuff.
Ok but the electorate actually isn’t to the left of them on pretty much everything, as evidenced by the fact that Republicans control every lever of government.
The primary electorate in certain urban areas? Maybe. But even there, “antiestablishment” doesn’t code cleanly as left or right.
