The 'tomatl' (original Nahuatl name) is a berry eaten as a vegetable, introduced to Europe in the 16th century. Part of the Nightshade family (including many poisonous plants), the scientific name, Solanus lycopersicum, is borrowed from Galen, who never saw it however, and thought the thing impossible, a kind of fruit that could not exist in Nature. The chimerical name nonetheless stuck. The quote is from a letter sent by Baudelaire to Fernand Desnoyers (1855), related to "L'École païenne" an 1852 essay by Charles Baudelaire. An urban scene, in an American city of the Deep South: two trees visible on the other side of a brick wall; otherwise boxed in by buildings, against a clear, or hazy, sky. The one tree is some kind of palm with its fan-shaped fronds, possibly a Sabal palmetto, a popular landscape plant along the coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico (according to Wikipedia). The palm tree's unbranched 'trunk' or stem is mostly obscured, in the photo. It may be struggling in the heat and sun: multiple fronds are dried out and brittle. The other branched tree, species unknown, still has geen leaves in its canopy. Photo taken at the height of summer. A black streetlamp in the foreground, rounds out the scene.
