LENZING – Speciality fibre maker Lenzing has partnered with Swiss materials start up OceanSafe to launch a pioneering new performance yarn. The material aims to offer brands a lower impact alternative to conventional polyester based sportswear while keeping moisture management and durability on par with synthetics. Register The collaboration combines Lenzing’s wood based Tencel Lyocell A100 fibres with OceanSafe’s naNea, a proprietary co polyester positioned as marine biodegradable, recyclable and free from heavy metals. According to test data cited by the partners, naNea achieved more than 93 per cent biodegradation in 99 days under ASTM D6691 marine conditions, has Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold material health status, and has passed additional aquatic toxicity and duckweed growth inhibition tests. Tencel Lyocell A100 fibres are produced in a closed loop process with a reported 99.8 per cent solvent recovery, using wood from certified or controlled sources. The fibre is said to deliver at least 50 per cent reductions in water use and carbon emissions versus generic lyocell, based on LCA results. As a first milestone, the partners have developed a capsule sportswear collection including women’s yoga wear, men’s athleisure T shirts and fleece jackets using the blended yarn. The fabric is promoted as soft, moisture managing and quick drying, with inherent odour control from the cellulosic component and abrasion resistance and UV fastness from naNea. Independent tests referenced by OceanSafe suggest naNea matches or exceeds PET in key performance indicators and can be processed in existing polyester dyeing and recycling systems, a claim that, if borne out at scale, would lower barriers to adoption for mills and brands. The collection will be shown to buyers at Performance Days in Munich and Functional Fabric Fair Portland as a plug and play option for brands seeking alternatives to fossil based synthetics in activewear, footwear and selected technical applications. Partners involved in yarn and fabric development include Tearfil, Impetus, Kingwhale and G Loft Premium Insulation.
