Octoberthon concluded with WoK, so good they made it twice. Imagine: there have been two new Spocks since then, and multiple spin-offs. 9 tv series and 11 films, all thanks to "Khaaaaannn."

Octoberthon continued yesterday with Superman II. It's very long and the Kryptonian fight looks dated, given what modern superhero films do. It's quite stylised & has a mythic feel, though, and the music is great.

Octoberthon continued yesterday with Clash of the Titans. The Harryhausen sequences are fantastic, especially Medusa. The live actors are all bland, except Olivier and Burgess Meredith.

A portmanteau film in the Amicus vein (hoho) for Octoberthon. Looks a lot like its contemporary, Hammer House of Horror. Includes BA Robertson and the Aldenham Park bridge- the one Tara King runs along in the Suits of Armour title sequence of The Avengers.

Into the sword & sorcery phase of Octoberthon. I saw Dragonslayer at Hamilton Odeon when fantasy (and Thos Hardy) was all I read. This Disney was probably q subversive & cynical at the time, but seems predictable to me now.

Octoberthon continues. Flash Gordon reminds me of Barbarella, but it has more in common with Superman and Annie than Star Wars. Nostalgia for 30s/40s pop culture in 70s USA and camp ( knowing & self-aware). The villains are great, the heroes bland or wooden. Big Influence on RTD Dr. Who.

Octoberthon continues with Corman's Battle Beyond the Stars. The acting is sometimes better than Star Wars, but it's very bland & derivative.
It's interesting that the first "original" Star Wars story from Marvel in 1977 was also The Magnificent Seven.

This cd and mock-up magazine, celebrating Marvel UK's Starburst, is entirely the reason for my dvd Octoberthon of sci-fi and fantasy films and tv of the late 70s and early 80s.

Octoberthon continues with a home invasion story as space farmers are menaced by a sinister imposter and his robot. Harvey Keitel is dubbed by Roy "Space 1999" Dotrice. Martin Amis wrote it. Farrah has no agency & Kirk Douglas is my age. Predictable but looks a bit like Bond.

Octoberthon yesterday afternoon: first, Star Trek TMP. Very slow. Very Gene Roddenberry as the Earth is saved by evolving into Space Sex People. It must've been a spectacle in the cinema, but there's an overture of music over a black screen for 100 seconds.

Octoberthon continues with Disney's Black Hole. A comedy robot mash-up of the Flying Dutchman and Frankenstein that ends in Hell. First encountered John Barry's swirling, Bondian score as a Beta Band sample. I enjoyed it, as a very dark kids' film.
