It took a long time for 'pride' (OE prȳde) to be settled as the English equivalent to Latin 'superbia' (i.e., the deadly sin).

Among those who remembered him as an idiot we could quote JRR Tolkien, who discussed the term ofermōd that the anonymous author of The Battle of Maldon used to describe Byrhtnoth's attitude. Ofermod could mean "excess of courage" or "arrogance" (like it's German relative, Übermut)
