1) Working on the replacement leather strap for the #Oililly tote. It's going to need to be spliced,, so I diagonal cut the locations and zigzag stitched to splice leather strips to get the right length. The top piece gets 1 splice, the bottom will get 2.

1) #HandbagRepair thread #3, this one is on a Oililly Germaine Weekender satchel, which lists fir around $200 US. This one is a tough call, as I'm estimating the repairs are going to be around that much. The handles on this are showing some significant damage and wear at several points.

Now that all the pieces for the #Oililly tote are stitched together, I'm coating the edges with a blend of Angelus leather paints I whipped up.
I could have futzed around with color matching a little bit more, but I think I did a good job.

Ok, one side of the #Oililly tote replacement leather strap is done, working on the other side. Alternated the splice angles,, and gluing some non-woven material at the joint.

They don't get a lot of traction outside my close friends/followers, but I've got a number of those that are inquisitive about processes of all kinds, so I enjoy sharing. I could possibly cut the cost of the Oililly repair in half, if Carla was willing to accept a style and color discrepancy

I'll be so happy when I get my Gutermann thread color cards. 4 weeks and 3 orders to finally get the correct thread for @cwalworth.bsky.social's Oililly tote. Do I need 300 meters of it? No, but I have a feeling that's how a lot of my thread purchases will go from here.

And unlike the original, which was some weird bonded /composite leather abomination with a very thin top layer, the replacements won't peal and flake apart.
Do people want a refresher on the steps and materials used?

5) If I'm allowed to sew the new handles on through the lining, replacing the handles will run around $150, if no stitching showing through the lining is wanted, the cost will be around $200, due to the extra time required to open up and reclose the lining and outer shell.

4) I think I've found a leather that will be a close match in color and texture to the original, and should be more durable as it is dyed through, rather than surface dyed. It's $49 for the piece, and with the labor required to make new handles the estimated cost is around $120 to make the handles.

I probably spent that on the 3 orders of thread it took to find the right thread for the new leather straps on the Oililly satchel I'm repairing, by having to guess/bracket colors from computer screen pics. Having this before would have saved that money and 4 weeks of time.
