I think it would all be very instructive for people to read "Last Call" by Daniel Okrent, paying special attention to the rise and political machine of the Anti-Saloon League. If you're thinking the current GOP delegration seems unshakable, take some cheer that things don't last.

Apropos of this, I just finished the new Daniel Okrent bio of Sondheim, and fellow Sondheads: it’s GREAT. I learned lots of new information (his favorite poem! His drug use!) and was convinced by the themes Okrent lays out. Plus it’s got me back into the OBCRs—always a boon.
On this day in 1984, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE had its first preview at the Booth Theatre. A blank page or canvas…

"The big difference is that the xenophobes of that period disguised it. They didn’t come right out and say ‘shithole countries’ or even such a thing in more polite language,” said Daniel Okrent, author of “The Guarded Gate"

Tomorrow is pub day for Daniel Okrent's extraordinary Sondheim biography ART ISN'T EASY, a fascinating and extraordinarily well-researched life study packed into 230 wonderfully written pages. Okrent was on with Terry Gross this afternoon for a swell 40 minutes. Get the book. You won't be sorry.

There's a term for this!

"Okrent's Law", named for the first public editor of NYT, who coined it:
"The pursuit of balance can create imbalance because sometimes something is true"

Yes, exactly. The problem when your husband drinks his pay and beats you is much better solved that way than (ineffectively) banning alcohol.

Last Call is an amazing book btw. Daniel Okrent.

Post 20 books on your current TBR shelf. One book a day for 20 days, in no particular order.

No explanations, no expectations, just covers. (Make a 🧵 out of it so people can see all your picks in the same place.)

Ugh sorry should have checked the time stamp. Anyway the Daniel Okrent book about prohibition says per capital ethanol consumption was 7 gallons a year by 1830.

Daniel Okrent once likened Game 6 of the 1975 World Series to a Russian novel. This is more like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
