Best foot forward? A Treecreeper, Certhia familiaris, recently at #OldLodgeNR, a common resident in Sussex, though probably often unseen, reported in 34% of tetrads in 2024.

Speckled Wood at #OldLodgeNR at the weekend. Overwintering as either caterpillar or chrysalis, with females acting dead to avoid males, who resort to sparring with other males this is always a fascinating and appealing butterfly.

Phoenicurus phoenicurus - encouraging evidence for confirmed breeding of Common Redstart at #OldLodgeNR with quite a number of Common Redstart fledglings to be found at the weekend. Recorded in only 81 Sx tetrads.

Female Dendrocopus major, I watched this at the bottom of a tree at #OldLodgeNR @sussexwildlife.bsky.social - was it looking for insects amongst the moss or does it use moss in its nest holes that are drilled every year? I was then distracted by a singing Woodlark.. @btobirds.bsky.social

Lullula arborea the Woodlark at @sussexwildlife.bsky.social #OldLodgeNR last week. Records across all of Ashdown Forest in 2023 ( @sussexornitholo.bsky.social ) suggest there were at least 30 territories there for this scarce Sussex resident. #sussexbirding #ukbirding

2 more Dragonfly from a wander at #OldLodgeNR this week (despite emptying heathland pools): Keeled Skimmer (L) and Golden-ringed Dragonfly (R). 20+ years ago the Golden-ringed was a scarce species in Sussex.
