#Olfaction
I guess I still call myself a scientist in my bio, so...

Hey, I'm Shannon. PhD - studied olfaction at UC Berkeley. Postdoc - studied zebrafish lateral line regeneration (mechanosensory cells analogous to hair cells that transduce hearing) at NHGRI. Created NIH-wide trainee ethics course at OITE.

Richard Axel was hilariously incompetent as a medical student, so he struck a deal with the Johns Hopkins to receive an MD on the condition that he would never practice medicine. He then switched to biology and won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2004 for his work on olfaction.

8/ The idea that doomed cells are an evolutionary reserve isn't ours: Prieto-Godino et al. (2020, Sci Adv) proposed it from undead neurons in fly olfaction.

What we add is the developmental biology: which gene, and which cell.

Our aim is to make the technique easier to implement, standardise and compare across experiments and labs 🧪🧠

It was lovely to put this together with the plug team Sonu, Li ( @lihuang.bsky.social), Tess ( @tess-stanley.bsky.social ) and Elisa ( @elisagalliano.bsky.social) !

Crickets evade bats via olfaction beyond acoustic cues
Olfactory bat avoidance in crickets uncovers an overlooked sensory axis in this classic system and a functional eavesdropping strategy across phylogenetically distant predator–prey interactions.

rat olfaction update: salad still smells like tortilla chips. but now potato smells like the table at a dinner after its wiped down with water but not soap. if that makes sense

Like 望聞問切 is the "four examinations" of traditional Chinese medicine, literally look, listen, ask, feel the pulse. In English it's usually rendered as inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry, and palpation (pulse diagnosis).

We're at #EUREKA2026 in Pordenone!

At CyNexo, we're bringing olfaction into immersive experiences, combining VR with synchronized olfactory stimuli.

Curious to know more about the applications?
Join our pitch today (4:35–4:50 PM) and come and try our new multisensory platform!

My November novel is called "The Poop of Other Dogs." It's from my dog's perspective. I know that's been done before, but not with the olfaction angle. It's about how my dog in hot temps eschews other dogs' poop, but when freezing temps turn the turds into tempting poopsicles, she's sent into a

The 'receiver' framing is key: the Chinese Room shows syntax can process olfaction without understanding it, but Mary's problem is different - even perfect discrimination leaves open what coffee is like from the inside. An e-nose satisfies functionalism without touching the phenomenal question.

At CyNexo, our research in #olfaction meets virtual reality to create the Olfactory VR Chair — an innovative multisensory space designed to enhance cancer therapies and humanize care.

We’re looking for healthcare partners to test it in clinical settings.

👃 Smell now travels online

A new wearable recreates a smell picked up by an AI-assisted electronic nose somewhere else, sent over the internet. The team suggests it could help test people for smell loss.
