Lake Suwa was fully frozen on January 26, but temperatures increased soon afterward.
Yesterday, Shinto priests declared Akenoumi (meaning the lake failed to remain frozen), indicating that Omiwatari did not occur this winter.

Here's the report from today. Apparently, omiwatari occurs if the temperature reaches -10°C for three days. This season, temperatures did drop to that level but not for long enough for omiwatari. Today, the temperature was -8°C. www.yomiuri.co.jp/national/202...

There's also Lake Suwa which is "vanishing" from the lives of people as traditions are being wiped out by climate change. The lake once would freeze over & festivals were held on the ice, but the thinness of the ice these days makes the situation too dangerous.
