#OneUpmanShip
We are watching in real time an amazing spiral of stupidity oneupmanship.

You call that an apology? I'll show you an apology!

- Richard Dreyfus in denim
- featured barrels
- chum buckets
- Scar oneupmanship
- Robert Shaw mastication
What are your top 5 movie genres? mine are:

- the scary and also hot ones
- when someone doesn’t know they’re a ghost
What are your top 5 movie genres? mine are:
-She is street smart/zany & he is not handling it well while being a bit turned on.
-epic with much scenery. Maybe some horses? And sunsets.
-She is smarter than everyone. Even him.
-The hope of a happy ending but not sure.
-Gene Kelly's butt.

One annoying thing about Bluesky is how much people love oneupmanship. You say something is bad and immediately get jerkoffs accusing you of not hating it enough

a lot of rich guys take Ls but Elon, a master of oneupmanship, always buys his for between seven and ten figures

The 1% just gotta keep that hobby oneupmanship going.

Everyone who came here from Twitter way back has worked to break themselves of the algorithmic-driven, toxic dunk culture brain worms. We had some tough runs but pushed through by simply blocking people we think are jerks and not acting like this is a competition, self-promotion, oneupmanship space

Isn't this a good reason for solidarity, rather than attempts at oneupmanship?

You should’ve engaged them in an endless game of oneupmanship like the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

“Oh, you think Birmingham was worse than literal slavery?”

CBS tried to take on NBC using literal oneupmanship with My 4 Dads

It's a good thing fighter jet pilots are famous for not having a culture of boundary-pushing and oneupmanship, otherwise this could get out of hand
Reader, I checked and checked again, and this is Secretary Hegseth’s actual account

Exactly. Always his main motive, not just winning and oneupmanship but making sure the "losers" get trashed along the way. The Obama's (Nobel Peace Prize), the Kennedy's (Kennedy Center, the entire legacy) - it's the worst kind of envy.

Bit of oneupmanship. I have an inner dialogue. Philosopher’s occupational hazard.
Over on Twitter I asked this question. The percentages may change depending on what Google throws up first but 50% is mentioned a lot. What about people on here? Do you hear yourself narrate, see images or just absorb the information?
November 8, 2024 at 11:33 PM
That’s exactly what I meant, nail on head.
The chest-puffing oneupmanship of “oh, didn’t you know…?” before then boring you rigid for the next (if you’re lucky, only) fifteen minutes.
Hard pass.

The new front in the battle of academic oneupmanship is how many of your papers Meta stole to train its AI. Can see this replacing the h index.
March 21, 2025 at 8:34 AM
You mean you wanted dialogue, not oneupmanship? That's crazy talk.

They seem to be in a game of oneupmanship with the NYT over who can publish the worst opinion about today’s events.

The US/UK oneupmanship on bad policy would be laughable if it wasn't all so utterly abhorrent.
This new proposed UK refugee policy (turfing refugees out after a few years) is bollocks on several levels and I will explain each of them.

An introduction of sorts.
I’m at seven dead since the start of the ongoing pandemic, the two most recent, my parents died within days of each other earlier this year.
COVID precautions, masking, especially in healthcare, is not a game of theoretical oneupmanship over here.
No condolences, mask up.

It occurred to me, for the 379th or so time, that some people view conversation, IRL or online, as a competition, an opportunity for oneupmanship, and these people use up all your psychic energy (and are boring), and the best thing you can do is to summarily bar them from accessing you.

I’m exhausted from conservative propaganda
and liberal moral oneupmanship

*in a heated oneupmanship battle drinking aged tea* oh that’s passable if you consider 1890’s aged I guess. My daily is a petrified Paleozoic log though

24f is too much for me actually

Being clear- if this agreement holds, that’s great. Nobody wants the economy in constant chaos. I don’t want high gas prices. I certainly don’t want to tip into a wider war because of stupid one oneupmanship.
From what I understand, tankers currently in the gulf leaving is only part of it - the bigger issue is getting empty tankers in and production restarted.
