The province is named after the lake! The lake was called "Ontarí:io" by the Wyandot (great lake) and "Skanadario" by the Iroquois (sparkling/beautiful water)!

The name Ontario comes from the Haudenosaunee word Ontarí:io, translated as “great lake” or “beautiful water.”

Ontario was named for Lake Ontario when it was created in 1867-Confederation. The lake’s name predates Canada, predates the US, & European settlement

The Wendat occupied parts of the St. Lawrence Valley to the Great Lakes.
They named the lake "Ontari:io".
Wendat Nation Grand Chief Pierre Picard told The Canadian Press his nation was shocked, renaming Lake Ontario calling it an attempt to eradicate their history in the region.
