You're looking at a Rainbow Tripod Fish (genus Bathypterois) observed on a blackwater dive near Cozumel, MX.

This species demonstrates "ontogenetic vertical migration": young of this species mimic jellyfish near the surface, but descend in depth as they age.

Was wondering why the online paleoart community is obsessed with proportions & ratios on dinosaur drawings (despite taphonomic distortion, missing data & unknown ontogenetic trajectories and intraspecies variation). Is it because of popularisation of very Western, male & rather wrong Loomis method?

Ontogenetic Changes in Endocranial Anatomy in Gorgosaurus libratus (Theropoda: Tyrannosauridae) Provide Insight Into the Evolution of the Tyrannosauroid Endocranium
Changes through growth (ontogenetic) in the braincase of the eutyrannosaurian tyrannosauroid Gorgosaurus libratus are discussed. Most notably, brain cavity endocasts of immature Gorgosaurus are found....

We just published the first study showing that a bird-of-prey goes through an ontogenetic window of exploratory play.

Young goshawks look like young cheetahs when tossing pine cones into the air, chasing after them.

After a mass extinction, things tend to become smaller. Paleontologists call that the "Lilliput Effect". That is a pattern, but what is the process? It could be ontogenetic due to environmental stress, but it could also be selective sorting. 🧪⚒️

“Traits” are central units of biological analysis—but how should they be individuated, and relative to which ontogenetic frame of reference? In my new paper, I argue that answering this isn’t easy—and matters more than it seems. 📃👇 link.springer.com/article/10.1... #philsci #HPBio #evosky #evodevo

💀 the skull shows some differences to the adult skull shape (especially in the zygomatic region).

Did Homotherium show ontogenetic allometry in its skull?

I can't wait to see geometric morphometric analysis!

I've been fascinated by the 1989 work of F. Rothen & A.-J. Koch: "Phyllotaxis or the properties of spiral lattices. - II. Packing of circles along logarithmic spirals" but I'm finding the math difficult to follow for the circle packing. I did learn how to create their spiral lattices. #MathArt
