Incredibly proud to share that our work on Cryptosporidium Oocyst Wall Proteins is published in
@PLOSPathogens
journals.plos.org/plospathogen...

Led by previous PhD student
@BacchettiRoss
and carried on by current PhD student, Sarah Stevens.
Cryptosporidium oocyst wall proteins are true components of the oocyst wall and COWP8 is not required for parasite transmission
Author summary Infection with Cryptosporidium causes diarrhoea, which can be fatal for malnourished children or people who are immunocompromised. There is no vaccine or effective medicines available t...

I won't be eating a salad

Word of the day is sporulate but bonus points if you can pronounce oocyst!

Effect of household bleach on the structure of the sporocyst wall of Toxoplasma gondii [2021 🧪]
This study suggests that the inner layers of the oocyst and sporocyst walls are the main structures responsible for the resistance of the parasite to household bleach.

I have read several articles/news stories on the cyclosporiasis outbreak and am aghast that most of their advice to avoid it is to "wash hands thoroughly & wash all fresh produce."

Which, yes- this is what you should ALWAYS do, but WASHING DOES NOT REMOVE OR KILL THE PARASITE. ONLY COOKING DOES.

We have a new paper investigating how mosquito nutrition affects malaria development.

Our findings suggest malaria parasites may actively adjust oocyst growth rate to best exploit nutritional resources.

Frontiers | Plasticity in malaria parasite development: mosquito resources influence vector-to-host transmission potential
Parasites rely on exploiting resources from their hosts and vectors for survival and transmission. This includes nutritional resources, which vary in availab...
