A galaxy of spiny brittle stars to captivate you for a moment, with a few strawberry anemones thrown in for good measure, at the Monterey Bay aquarium, California

Ophiocoma echinata

Das ist eine Schlangensternart. Wusste ich bis eben auch nicht, dass das gar keine Seesterne sind, sondern eine andere, eigene Klasse innerhalb des Stammes der Stachelhäuter (Echinodermata)😮

BIG BLACK BRITTLE STARS! Ophiomaza (feather star associate) and Ophiocoma! Both sizeable animals maybe 2 to 3 inches in diameter! The ridged one from central Pacific tropics, the other from Eastern tropics! #echinoday #ophiuroidea

Btw, the dancing brittle stars appear to be based on a species he thought he’d identified, which he named Ophiocoma goodsiri after his great friend John Goodsir (this species is now known as Ophiactis balli because someone else got there first with the naming)

Fun fact: brittle stars have no heart, brain, or eyes. Despite this, one species (Ophiocoma wendtii) can still see - using light receptors and colour changing cells across its body😯

This is why Barad's brittlestars don't see but touch (or rather interfere with) the world. They are just like electrons; fuzzy clouds of potential that overlay other electron-like entities and are shaped in this encounter.

Ophiocoma: Comprehensive Overview of Morphology, Classification, Habitat, Behavior, and Ecological Role Ophiocoma is a genus of brittle stars under the family Ophiocomidae within the class Ophiuroidea, phylum Echinodermata. These marine organisms are closely related to sea stars but differentiated by their slender, highly flexible arms which they use for movement and feeding. Ophiocoma species are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical oceans, primarily inhabiting coral reefs, rocky substrates, and seagrass beds.
