#Ophiostoma
Die letztes Jahr schon an Ophiostoma verloren gemeinte Ulme am Dachgarten hat sich dieses Jahr erholt!
Das bereitet Freude.

I think this is Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, the fungus which causes Dutch Elm Disease.

my ex
could identify trees
from a good distance
#elm
no bother she'd say
her mother
taught her apparently
to identify trees
handy I suppose
if you're a tree doctor
Dutch Elm Disease
what's your prognosis
Ophiostoma novo-ulmi
affects the trees
ability to
transport water
leading to death

Johanna Westerdijk was the first #female #professor in the Netherlands at a time when very few women had a place in #science.
Together with her two PhD students Marie Beatrice Schwarz and Christine Buisman, she identified #Ophiostoma ulmi as the #fungus responsible of the #DutchElmDisease.

. #NoticingNature A disease resistant elm thriving at Christchurch #Oxford. Their flower buds are just about to burst open!

Most of Europe's elms were devastated in the last century by Dutch elm disease, caused by the fungus Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, spread by bark mining beetles.

This stump was showing all the signs of DED (which is expected, this plantation contains plenty of intentionally ill trees): there was discoloration in the growth lines showing that either Ophiostoma novo-ulmi or Ophiostoma ulmi had been present.
