Orchids aren't just those blue-dyed* flowers sold in supermarkets by the checkout - they grow wild, all around us, even here in the UK. You don't have to travel far to find them, and even the spectacular Ophrys bee #orchids grow wild here, some quite widespread.

*what IS that all about?! 😱

Time spent orchid-hunting yesterday on open, dry hillsides in Cyprus delivered a kaleidoscope of new Ophrys bee #orchids. Today we head to a very different, woodland habitat instead. What will we find there? Stay tuned...

There's something two-faced in Rhodes. I don't see it every year, but I keep my eyes open for it...

Occasionally Ophrys bee #orchids form lusus flowers, with aberrant petals and/or sepals. Here's Ophrys calypsus and O. polyxo, each with two lips fused on one flowerhead.

The many and varied Ophrys bee #orchids to be found on Cyprus make for wonderful photographic subjects - on our relaxing and gentle-paced orchid tour there we make plenty of time for enjoying the plants in their own right, or as subjects for a photo or two!

A brief hiatus in tour leading for @mariposanature.bsky.social lately has given me a chance to make some inroads into my spring orchid trip reports, the latest being that for the orchid wonderland that's the Gargano Peninsula in Italy, home to a rainbow of Ophrys bee #orchids, personal favourites.

While there are undoubtedly glitzier, more colourful Ophrys bee orchids to be seen in Europe, we think the understated elegance of Ophrys reinholdii takes an awful lot of beating. Nobody's #bloomscrolling day was ever made worse by one of these beauties!
