#1665 - Camponotus marcens
A species of Carpenter Ant where the minor workers look bizarrely similar to the workers from a completely different genus, the Strobe Ants (Opisthopsis). Found only in the Darling Range (as here,...

#204 - Formicine Ant?
Bit puzzled by this one. It behaved like a Strobe Ant (Opisthopsis sp.) turning to run a short way towards me, then freezing or hiding under a leaf, but while the eyes are in the right spot, they...

In 2012 driving across Oz I had stopped at Gilgandra & found an odd looking large-eyed strobe ant. It took us 10 years to start studying them. Fast forward to 2025 - @gmramon.bsky.social submits his PhD thesis on the sensory ecology of these fantastic ants. Wohooo! Keep an EYE for his papers 🥂🎉🐜🧭

I found a small strobe-ant mimicking Mutillid in Australia and didn't realise it wasn't a strobe ant (Opisthopsis) until much later while looking closely at the photos.

Opisthopsis haddoni strobe ant. Northern Territory, Australia.
Macro photograph of a shiny, nearly hairless orange ant in side view against a black background. The ant’s antennae are alert, raised, and the eyes are bulbous and located oddly at the very top of the ant’s head.

💯 at a glance I almost thought it was an Opisthopsis! Probably much too small though!

No matter where you go, Opisthopsis is staring at you.
Top-down photo of a stout shiny orange ant with a black-tipped abdomen and very large round eyes at the top corner of the head, standing on a pure white background.
