Overvolted #LaserActive back in business! This poor guy’s PSU optocoupler self immolated, causing the PSU to lose regulation, which killed the video and line memory IC’s, in addition to a logic IC. Dropping in CLD PD and replacing the IC’s and it’s now fully operational!!

Tech time. This is how all those troublesome combo key presses work. Trees of serially connected optocouplers. So press any shifted key and it activates one coupler for the actual key, and then the current flows out through a symbol/shift optocoupler at the bottom.🧵

Validated the Board Folk #LaserActive SYPS repro using a PSU that went supernova! In the process, I replaced the dead optocoupler & primary side BJT plus a pair of 2.2k resistors that were open circuit. You can see how rancid the original board was 🤮 Found 2 errors to fix also!

Doing a bit more modular synth DIY experimentation - here are 2 crude passive VCAs!
Just uses 3 sockets, an optocoupler and a diode per VCA. They distort at low CV values but are still pretty useful, especially for percussive sounds!

Wary of damaging downstream components (more than they already were), I set the PSU up in "bench mode," replaced the transistor & fuse, and tried again. Poof! Looking around, I spotted some crustiness around the optocoupler and removed it, then one of the legs disintegrated!

These multi winding transformer topologies are usually regulated off of the most important rail. It’s possible that the voltage driving the optocoupler (I would wager that’s the feedback set up here) is out of whack, which could cause everything else to regulate similarly lower

Power up test looks good. No smoke. Commands to clear and set write protection are successful.
I'm going to make a slight change to the control circuit:
- Use a FET to control the optocoupler for more 'on' current.
- Add a resistor divider to monitor the 9V output.

I still have a homemade MIDI interface for the Spectrum. An engineer made one, then had me solder my own. Still got the manual, can't find the actual interface. I remember it having an RS232 chip and an optocoupler.

News from my Altair Mini journey: The basic Euclidean algorithm works in MBasic and the value is shown on LED 0 of the LED output register card. I've also "hacked" the LED ribbon cable and put a 74HCT244 driver in there and an optocoupler, which I'll test next.

this is what we were musing over. all it's doing is driving an optocoupler, so suitably restrained current-wise it would be fine, and it's close to doing this. but it's so far removed from actual midi spec, that it wouldn't be recommend trying it to prove a point .
