#Oracy
I've written a new book called 'Inclusive Oracy in evidence based adaptive teaching, inclusion oracy'.

Do you think it will sell?

Latest on our Substack - a post from my colleague Chris that brings some data to bear on a claim I made in my last post about oracy.

My worry is that a lot of people want to teach oracy (and vocational courses) not because they actually value oracy and vocational per se...

...but because they think that kids who struggle academically will do well at them.

But what if that's not true? What if the kids who struggle academically don't do that well at vocational or oracy either?

Proponents of oracy say it isn't “that weird or complicated” & imply anyone who’s sceptical about its wholesale introduction is a freak who wants to shut children up. I don’t think that’s quite fair. Here are 5 reasons oracy might be great & 5 to be cautious daviddidau.substack.com/p/the-weird-...
The “weird and complicated” world of oracy
Arguing about people’s motivations is never going to build consensus so here’s a clear outline of what I lke and what I’m sceptical about when it comes to oracy

Lucy Powell has promised to give oracy the same status as reading and writing – but unless inclusion is at the heart of this plan, the children who need these skills the most will be left behind, warns Louisa Reeves of @speechandlanguk.bsky.social
Why a focus on oracy risks leaving behind pupils with communication needs
It is not enough just to create more opportunities for pupils to talk in schools, writes Louisa Reeves. The push on oracy must be inclusive by design

One of the reasons it was small is that it is time-consuming to run oracy assessments. Our most recent writing assessment had 75k students taking part and probably took less time.

Of course efficiency isn't everything, so that's not a reason not to assess oracy - but it is worth bearing in mind.

It’s a little disappointing that you couldn’t emphasise oracy a bit more.

An absolute pleasure to kick off the new half term with the St Catherine's RC Primary School team today!

We explored metacognitive theory, foundational learning, questioning, oracy, resilience and so much more!

Thank you for having me - I can't wait to return!

There's also a case study of my school's work on CLA in the recently published book by Amy Gaunt and Alice Stott from @voice21oracy.bsky.social

Their book will be an excellent support for schools developing effective oracy practice.

We have mapped P4C on to the Oracy Skills Framework (developed by Oracy Cambridge and Voice 21) here buff.ly/wdjds9O. Teachers can feel confident that they are implementing the Physical, Linguistic, Cognitive and Social & Emotional strands using P4C in their classrooms.

Chris presents some data from a fairly small oracy assessment project we ran a few years ago.

It was small - just a few hundred students - and that limits what we can say. But I still think it's pretty suggestive.

Trainees I work with are starting to think about their first PGCE assignment so in #MathsToday I’m re-reading Malcom Swan’s famous “Dealing with misconceptions in mathematics”. Interesting to re-read in light of all the oracy stuff going on

[but yes, I agree it should be taught in schools. I get the feeling it likely is in private schools, e.g., in the IB, or in debating/oracy sessions].

Equally, her treatment of oracy is a bit flimsy. I didn't find the Amanda Spielman blog she linked to persuasive - especially it's rather self-satisfied tone and lazy dismissal of oracy as a liberal fad - but she did at least link to David Didau, whose blog on the subject was very interesting.
