Orange County adopts updated animal‑services ordinance: mandatory spay/neuter on first impound, microchipping and codified TNR
The board approved a comprehensive rewrite of the county animal‑services code — the first major update since 2005 — that expands mandatory spay/neuter to animals impounded at large, requires microchipping on reclaim, codifies trap‑neuter‑return for community cats, updates stray‑hold timeframes and aligns dangerous‑dog provisions with new state law.

A few weeks ago, we received a call about a possibly sick stray dog that was running by a highway. Residents were trying to catch it, but the dog was young, nervous and extremely scared. Our officers responded, and were able to trap the dog using treats and food. This is how we met Stewie. Our vets estimate Stewie to be about a year old. It’s clear to see he’s had very little training and socialization. He is frightened by everything, especially the leash. When he first arrived, he was so scared of everyone that he would retreat to the back of the kennel and box staff away with his paws. And the leash would terrify him, and he would roll and cry and fight to get it off. It’s been almost a month, and Stewie is getting better. Little by little, day by day. It’s a testament to the patience of our behavior team and our staff, who work with him as much as they can. Oddly enough, through trial and error, they found out that Stewie walks rather well on his back legs and will walk however a long distance he needs to, as long as you’re holding his front paws. We think it’s maybe a comfort thing? Regardless, it’s adorable, and truly a first for us. Stewie is basically a scared puppy and will need a lot of training, a lot of patience, and a lot of love. We don’t know why he’s here, but we know he has the potential to be an amazing dog. Let’s get him seen.Let’s get him home.#adoptlove #adoptashelterdog #shelterdogs #adoptdontshop #rescuedogs #sweetdogs

**URGENT: FLASH SALE** Over the holiday weekend, the shelter took in an unprecedented 148 animals in the span of three days. Some were strays, some were abandoned, some surrendered. We are now caring for almost 400 animals here at our shelter, and an additional 261 in foster homes. Over the past few weeks, adoption numbers have gone down, and a lot of our animals have just been sitting in their kennels, day after day, with little to no interactions. Our longest resident dog has been here for almost 160 days, and there are several others that are about to reach the 100 day mark. Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, September 3rd, and spanning through Friday. September 5th, the shelter will be hosting a “Flash Sale.” For all adoptable cats and dogs, adoption fees will be reduced from $80 to $10. Each and every time we’ve reached out to our community for help, seeking adopters and additional foster homes, people have stepped up. We’re hoping to see that again this time, because we need your support to help these precious animals. We’re asking our community to visit the shelter this week, and look inside every kennel at every sweet face. We’re asking them to take a chance. There’s never been a better time to adopt love.Let’s get them all seen.Let’s get them all home.#adoptlove #adoptashelterdog #shelterdogs #adoptdontshop #flashsale #doglovers #catlovers #sheltercats #adoptasheltercat
