Italian anti-mafia authorities seized €3.2 million ($3.6 million) in cash from an apartment in Caivano, near Naples, during a dawn raid on Monday that resulted in the arrests of 34 people. According to the Naples Carabinieri military police, the money was concealed in multiple locations throughout the apartment, including behind wall and floor tiles, inside furniture, and in hidden wardrobe drawers. The cash consisted largely of €50 notes wrapped in cellophane and arranged in organized stacks. Officers removed the money using plastic mop buckets before transferring it to an armored vehicle. Authorities also reported finding 11 luxury Rolex watches, weapons, and equipment allegedly associated with drug trafficking. The operation was conducted as part of a months-long investigation led by Naples anti-mafia prosecutor Nicola Gratteri. Investigators said they intercepted mobile phones that had allegedly been smuggled into prisons for incarcerated organized-crime figures, while information from protected informants also contributed to the investigation. The 34 suspects are accused of mafia-style criminal association, drug trafficking, extortion, and possession of drugs for distribution. Prosecutors said the suspects were allegedly connected to the Angelino clan, which they said had established a significant presence in Caivano. The local government was placed under judicial administration last year because of alleged organized-crime infiltration. The raid has also prompted political debate over the effectiveness of Italy’s so-called Caivano Model, a government initiative launched in 2023 to address crime and social problems in the area. Opposition politicians argued that the investigation demonstrates that organized crime remains a serious problem despite the initiative. Authorities said the seized money will be transferred to Italy’s Justice Fund, which supports victims of organized crime.
