#Orizzonti2025
2019 Forum and 2022 Cannes Fortnight, Cornish Mark Jenkin arrives at #Orizzonti2025 with Rose of Nevada for Protagonist. Quoting Cronenberg, the experimental first part is hardly convincing, with visual and sound fetishism barely justified by what follows. Low potential without cutting 30 minutes.

After two underperforming films, at Rotterdam BF and at San Sebastian HL, Ecuadorian Ana Cristina Barragán presents The Ivy at #Orizzonti2025 for Bendita - award-winning wip in Toulouse. The observation is always a little strange and the result never quite lives up to the ambition.

After an over-rated debut at 2021 Cannes Critics Week, Italian Laura Samani presents her second Un Anno di Scuola at #Orizzonti2025 for The Party. A Diane Kurys-style coming of age adaptation, clumsy, flat and predictable. Profiled mainly for RAI viewers obviously.

Discovered in San Sebastian and then at FID Marseille with his shorts, Catalan Jaume Claret Muxart presents Strange River at #Orizzonti2025 for Films Boutique, awarded as wip at Les Arcs 2024. A precious 16mm coming-of-age film, gently experimental, a long, superficial and disappointing fantasy.

In San Sebastian ND with a second powerful film, Japanese Akio Fujimoro presents Lost Land at #Orizzonti2025 for Rediance after winning an award at e-wip last autumn. The surprise, Rohingya refugees, is unfortunately marred by a second half overly seductive. A likely award for the wrong reasons.

After two shorts at Cannes and a debut at Orizzonti, Iranian Ali Asgari returns to #Orizzonti2025 with Divine Comedy for Goodfellas. The acid autobiographical odyssey, underfunded, is delightfully dark, but mainly aimed at insiders. Some undeniably courageous scenes, awaiting the next installment.

Discovered in 2004 Rotterdam and already in this section in 2022, Macedonian Teona Strugar Mitevska opens #Orizzonti2025 with Mother for Kinology, a project that won an award at ArrasDays three years ago. A Belgian film in English, it's confusing, unfriendly, ostentatious and noisy - but not awful.
August 27, 2025 at 4:14 PM
After a debut at Orizzonti Extra and Toronto in 2022, Italian Carolina Cavalli presents The Kidnapping of Arabella at #Orizzonti2025 for Piper. It's all pathetic, with American star Chris Pine completely lost, the kind of cold humour you expect in Rome at best.

An important critic and New York programmer for decades, American Kent Jones presents his second fiction Late Fame at Orizzonti2025 for mk2. With an overly simplistic script, low-budget production and stilted acting, the film only really touches in the final scenes – hard to say no to him too.

After an already Thai debut at Bafici 2017, German director Roderick Warich presents Funeral Casino Blues in #Orizzonti2025 for Pluto. A strange proposition, neither truly arthouse nor mainstream, this weak and lengthy nocturnal dive is not particularly well performed either.

2009 Locarno, Forum 2022 and editor at Pampero, Argentine Alejo Moguillansky presents Pin de Fartie at #Orizzonti2025. Formally accomplished, the triple theatrical exercise does little to amuse - a painful set-up, a frontally intellectual result, something the collective had avoided until now.

Discovered in 2022 with a very different - and disappointing - debut, Romanian Mihai Mincan returns to #Orizzonti2025 to present Milk Teeth for Cercamon. A steady pre-revolution delivery, the film is carried by its intentions and a technique bordering on pretension.
August 29, 2025 at 3:13 PM
Spotted by Bafici & Locarno, last in 2022 Berlinale Encounters, Argentine photographer Gastón Solinicki, also actor here, remains in Vienna with The Souffleur, again at #Orizzonti2025 for Magnify. Poetic improvisations that never quite convince – even though it's short, the film feels very long.

After two shorts in Clermont Ferrand, Japanese-French Akihiro Hata developed The Site at TFL 2018, today at #Orizzonti2025 for WTF. A solid first hour of social and nocturnal drama, inspired actors, filmed by David Chizallet, but the supernatural resolution leaves a feeling of incompleteness.

Big winner at Busan 2012 with his debut 36, uneven Thai Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit presents his ninth film, Human Resource, at #Orizzonti2025 today for GDH 559. Extremely cold, a long harsh but intriguing urban portrait of a young pregnant woman. Solid directing indeed, award possible.

Promoted by the renowned Anurag Kadhyap, Indian Anuparna Roy's debut film, Songs of Forgotten Trees, is being launched at #Orizzonti2025 for Celluloïd Dreams. Clumsy and clearly low-budget, her short essay focuses on characters rarely seen, centred around home prostitution. More suited to Busan.

Also an actress, Slovakian Tereza Nvotová was discovered at Jihlava 2008, Rotterdam BF 2017, and winner of Locarno FotP in 2022. Her third fiction film, Father, is being launched at #Orizzonti2025 for Intramovies. Neither original nor impressive, the film is driven by its actor Milan Ondrík.
