Stanley Cursiter was born and educated in Kirkwall, Orkney. He studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and later spent much of his life in Edinburgh. After 1948, he increasingly visited Orkney and devoted more time to painting the island.

'Last night I dreamt I went to Orkney Library again.'

Happy Birthday to Daphne Du Maurier, born 119 years ago (on the 13th May) in 1907. 🎂

Remembering that time we made a Daphne Du Maurier Biography #Bookface in the Orkney Room.

Happy 479th Birthday to Miguel Cervantes who was born #onthisday in 1547 🎂

In his most famous work Don Quixote, the title character charges at windmills, mistaking them for monstrous giants with swords, so in tribute we're all going up Burgar Hill in #Orkney to tilt at the wind turbines. 🎉

Happy 86th Birthday to Sir Ringo Starr, who was born on the 7th July 1940! 🥳

We don't know if Ringo ever visited #Orkney (though Paul McCartney has) but #FunFact DID YOU KNOW that Ringo's great-grandfather was a merchant seaman from #Shetland who moved to Liverpool around 1870?

This is your occasional reminder that when Alexander Graham Bell (born #onthisday in 1847) invented the telephone, he suggested it be answered with the phrase 'ahoy-hoy.' Which is exactly what we say in #Orkney whenever we sail past the island of Hoy.

Happy birthday for tomorrow to Mary Shelley who was born on the 30th August 1797. 🎂

Did you know that in her most famous novel, she wrote that Dr Frankenstein travelled to #Orkney to create a mate for his monster?

So that was nice. She must have thought it was lovely here.

Born in Orkney but leaving for uni,I’ve lived longer off the island than I did on it. I now often wonder whether Orkney is where I’m from but Edinburgh is my home. But as soon as the boat pulls into Stromness,I know that Edinburgh is where I live but Orkney will always be my home. Til next time.

Born in the USA. This very obliging American Robin was a first for the island this afternoon, not what we thought the easterly winds had in store for us! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Happy 255th Birthday to Sir Walter Scott who was born #otd in 1771. Sir Walter visited #Orkney in 1814 aboard the Northern Lighthouse Yacht Pharos.

He described Stromness as a 'little dirty straggling town, which cannot be traversed by a cart, or even by a horse,'

So that's a bit unfair.

I was born in Edinburgh, my parents were born in Edinburgh and all four of my grandparents were born in Edinburgh.

But only three of my great grandparents were born there. Two of them came from Orkney including Samuel Christie Annal who was born at Lythes, South Ronaldsay in 1882.

Grave of a Viking woman! #TombTuesday

These stones in the shape of a boat mark the spot where a Norse pagan woman was buried between 850-950 AD, on the Orkney Mainland

Bone analysis shows she was not born here in Orkney but in England or Ireland

My great grandmother, Margaret Miller, was born in Orphir, Orkney but shortly before the family departed for Edinburgh, the 1901 census finds them living at 32 Albert Street, Kirkwall. I'm not sure exactly where the house was (there's been some renumbering) but I'm working on it!

Today we're wishing a Happy 156th Birthday to #Orkney author and historian J. Storer Clouston - born on this day in 1870. Probably best known as the author of the 1917 novel The Spy in Black but he wrote many other novels, plays and history books.
