The Special Issue of the Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies, Orosius Through the Ages, is out!!

Co-edited with Elisabeth Manzo & Cameron Wachowich, on the boil since 2019, we're so pleased with the final output. Both Dr M. & Dr W. have completed their PhDs since then too!

Impressed by how my sharp-eyed students spotted today how the Vatican Vat. 6018 map (c. 770) includes size estimates for some Mediterranean islands, taken from Orosius.

it's funny that the far right says Rome fell bc of an immigrant invasion by Goths, bc when the Goths were starving, the corrupt Roman generals sold them into slavery for food. the problem was the treatment of the "immigrants" that led to the subsequent fury (see Jordanes, Orosius, and Ammianus).

The Old English word for 'duel' was ānwīġ, which literally meant 'singular war.' To challenge someone to a duel was ānwīġes biddan or ānwīġ ġecweðan; here is an example from Orosius:

Hē ðā Brutus ġecwæð ānwīġ wið þone cyning.
Brutus then challenged the king [Tarquin] to a duel.

Though the sack acquired a symbolic importance through the work of later Christian authors, such as Orosius, it was of little material significance in the moment.

Everything you wanted to know about medieval dreams of Ireland's apocalyptic imperial destiny but were afraid to ask! My article on the reception of Orosius' historiography by the Middle Irish narrative, Suidiugud Tellaig Temra, is now freely available on open access academic.oup.com/bics/article...

The Old English Orosius uses "Ostsǽ" for the Baltic when describing Wulfstan's voyage 😁

Presumably also a borrowing from somewhere closer to just west of the Baltic, since those places are where *austr- goes to Ost/oost/öst/øst, but it should be ēast/ǣst in Old English.

Vincent Wintermans from the @unileiden.bsky.social Library organised a small exhibition of Celtic language treasures as part of the Summer School. Marieke Meelen (Uni Cambridge) spoke about manuscripts with British Celtic glosses (Orosius' Historia adversus paganos, Boethius, Leiden Leechbook).

What are the sources for the Battle of the Egadi Islands in 241 BCE?

Ancient sources (ranked by reliability/information):
-Polybius (200-118 BCE)
-Diodorus (1st c. CE)
-Florus (74-130 c. CE)
-Eutropius (363–387 c. CE)
-Orosius (375/385-420 c. CE)
-Anon., De viris illustribus (4th c. CE?)

Eutropius, Orosius, and the Anon., De viris illustribus provide the least information and are not that reliable for the battle. Eutropius and Orosius state 32,000 Carthaginian prisoners were taken, three times the amount mentioned by Polybius and Diodorus.

I believe it was Orosius who wrote that Athaulf considered turning Romania into Gothia but he changed his mind after he realized that Romans had lower IQ.

Playing with comma.inria.fr found this fun variant in Orosius: "Ommitto Aethiopum interfectorem patris" with Aethiopum later corrected in Oedippum.
