Last week I unknowingly stumbled on the Berlin Holocaust Memorial: an undulating labyrinth of 2711 concrete slabs of different heights forming columns and rows into which one can descend. It was orotund, without any bluster, but the moment its meaning dawned on me was completely devastating.

It's so measured and elegant and rolling and smooth and considered and OROTUND that after a few pages my brain just slides off it. Which is a shame because the subject matter is fascinating and the sardonic remarks are even quite funny.

Point stands, though. The American centre has an almost erotic fixation on sounding "presidential" (which in this case means sounding etiolated and orotund, not to mention out of touch). Trump's 2020 era copied the way Americans talk in their kitchens and bedrooms.

In Churchill’s case, it probably wasn’t pretentious but just the way he thought. I’m afraid we’ve dropped a couple of notches in our manner of speech and writing. I like ‘orotund’!
