An intriguing fragment for #FrescoFriday which depicts an enhaloed deity in the center of a portico with large golden doors open in the background. A polished gold-bronze oscillum hung with a ribbon is suspended over the deity's head. Apollo? 🤷‍♂️ #ancientbluesky

Fresco fragment depicting an enhaloed deity in the center of a portico with large golden doors open in the background, red columns, and blue-green washed walls. A polished gold or bronze oscillum hung with a red ribbon is suspended over the deity's head. Oscilla were votive discs, frequently made from painted marble, that hung in porticoes and swung in the wind. Very colorful architecture. Villa Arianna, atrium, Stabia (ancient Stabiae), first half of the 1st century CE. Museo Archeologico di Stabia Libero D'Orsi (inv. 63846)

#FrescoFriday takes us into a garden in #Herculaneum, in the gloomily-named House of the Skeleton. Part of the #fresco decoration survives, showing us how the real garden extended into the painted space. Bushes, birds, and an #oscillum with a #Medusa all rise over a wicker fence. #AncientBluesky 🏺
GARDEN FRESCO, BEFORE 79 CE. HOUSE OF THE SKELETON, HERCULANEUM This somewhat faded fresco faces onto what was once a small garden with, at the centre of this frescoed wall (and still visible at lower right), a mosaic-covered niche which served as a lararium. A large red frame with a black lining serves as a fictive window looking into another, imaginary garden with a blue background. From this frame hangs a disc with a Gorgoneion on it. This is an oscillum, a disc in terracotta, stone, or metal with a low relief on it, that would be put up for feasts or celebrations, and would oscillate in the wind. On either side is a bush with a bird singing and facing the oscillum. The remains of a light wicker fence form a lower boundary for this garden.

Agreed. Is the 'handle' a small circle - her fingers seem to meet it on either side - like a ring for the object to hang from? An oscillum?

This fresco fragment was once part of the atrium of the Villa Arianna in ancient Stabiae, which was destroyed during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE.

Many of the fragmentary frescoes from this villa are now on display at the new Museo Archeologico di Stabia Libero D'Orsi. 🏺

"Os, oris" en latín significa "boca" (es una raíz muy clara en palabras como "oral" u "ósculo"). Pues resulta que su diminutivo, "oscillum", era una figurita de un rostro de Saturno o Baco que se suspendía de los árboles. Y eso nos dio el verbo "oscilar".

A lot of Christ’s early iconography came from Apollo-Helios, but the nimbus alone isn’t unusual - it’s frequently seen in images of Apollo and his sister Diana. In fact, this could *be* Diana, as it’s not obvious if it’s a man or woman. The golden oscillum above, however, may symbolize the sun.
Alcestis, in order to comply with the prophecy of Apollo (pictured top right, holding his bow, with a halo), agrees to sacrifice herself in place of her bridegroom, King Admetus. Pompeli, House of the Tragic Poet (Vi 8, 6), tablinum (dining room). 45-79 CE. Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN inv. 9026) This painting probably represents the judgment by Apollo in some sort of competition between Venus and Hesperos, the Evening Star, both deities who represent the same planet. In the past, Hesperos and his brother Phospheros (or Lucifer in Latin), the Morning Star, were discovered to be the same thing - a planet, which the Greeks then named Aphrodite, and the Romans named Venus. So, a contest between two entities who represent the same planet. In the official identification, Apollo - with the corona - is enthroned on the left, holding what looks like a pedum, a shepherd’s crook (why?). Hesperus is seated at top, and Venus is on the right. We’ve lost the myth that this is based on, so don’t really know what’s going on. I think the middle character, at the top, is Dionysus. Apollo-Helios on the left and possibly his sister Luna behind his throne ... ? On the right ... it's been suggested the woman might be Persephone, throwing off her cthonic robe, emerging into spring, with Demeter behind her. Pompeii, House of M. Gavius Rufus, VII 2, 16-17, exedra o 45-79 CE Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples (MANN inv. 9449)
