Made a tiny Christmas tree out of fossils: the stars are crinoid ossicles, the trunk dinosaur bone & the branches are sharks’ teeth 🎄🦴

Younger daughter & I found these fossilised crinoid rock stars (segments of the ‘stem’ of Jurassic feather stars/sea lilies, related to starfish & sea urchins) in the gravel on the edge of a lake nr Peterborough UK. She used them to make an ammonite:

Took younger daughter (who wants to be a paleontologist) to a lake near Peterborough last night. We found these Jurassic microfossils-teeny ammonites & crinoid ‘ossicles’-these little rock stars were part of the stems of crinoids/sea lilies-animals with 5 axes of symmetry related to sea urchins 🐚

Several Lower Jurassic (Liassic) #plesiosaurs and #ichthyosaurs are present and have had repairs, though damage from bird droppings needs to be kept in check. The visibility of the giant sclerotic rings and 'ossicles' of the limbs are an oddity; it's still not clear why Hawkins chose to show them...

A splendid example of Cretaceous goniasterid, Metopaster parkinsoni from the white chalks of KENT! You don't often find inact specimens like this-mostly individual ossicles. #echinoday

In NW Georgia collecting and studying Invertebrate fossils. I found many impressions of brachiopods, crinoid ossicles, and even occasional trilobite fragments in sandstone and ironstone layers. Still trying to determine the age with fossils. Could be Silurian or Mississippian.

Tinnitus answers the question: What would it sound like if the most annoying person in the world lived in your ossicles?

This is an impression of the bony armor surrounding Stegosaurus' throat for this Fossil Friday! These small, bony ossicles would have served as valuable protection. This specimen is housed at the Prehistoric Museum in Price, Utah. (1/2)

The ossicles (three tiny bones in the middle ear), particularly the stapes (stirrup), are widely considered the only body parts that remain the same size from birth until death. 👂
