#FossilFriday comes with an extra dose of #Crustmas tonight! ⚒️🧪

Ostracodes don't get a whole lot of attention among the general public, and so not a lot of love. But these bivalved crustaceans have quite the fossil record and thrive yet today, much as they try to pretend to be mollusks.

New species of #Ostracoda from bromeliad phytotelmata
Minute ostracod crustaceans of the genus Elpidium are strictly specialized in phytotelmata, small water bodies filling the holes of plants such as bromeliads. A new species of this genus has been described for the first time for the island of Hispaniola: doi.org/10.3897/zook...

@franzanth.bsky.social has been holding out on us. He's got at least two species of ostracods just hanging out in his yard?!? (the arrow thing and the elongate things are both ostracod)

I found a whole new order of creature in the garden this week: Ostracoda! Dozens of these tiny crustaceans were swimming around in a sunken upside-down bin lid we use as a ground level water feature in the back corner of our pocket meadow. @norfolknats.bsky.social

Temperature-driven oxygen consumption in Loxoconcha elliptica (Ostracoda: Podocopida), with limited differences among sexes and late ontogenetic stages - Aquatic Sciences
Ostracods are ecologically important indicators of aquatic ecosystem conditions because of their broad distribution and sensitivity to environmental change. As ectotherms, they are especially responsi...
