Cecile and Amanda presumably survive but disappear from the plot entirely. Meryl survives!! And Mei Ling. But Kojima was also planning to have the ending of mgs4 be Snake and Otacon to be executed!! Why?? And it only didn't happen because the rest of the team strongly opposed it!

Snake discovers Liquids body buried in the permafrost
Otacon: Is that Liquid?
Snake: *grumbles* Heeuhh, he's been frozen....
Both: Solid!
Kojima himself bursts out of the snow on his own metal gear while playing a giant guitar. Roll credits.

Forever grateful to Grossology animation director Matt Ferguson who told me "We might change the character design" when I first walked into the tryout with my geeky Otacon voice, which quickly morphed into a cautiously scientific Chris Tucker.
Months later, Lab Rat looked just like me!

If course love can bloom on a battlefield, otacon...live blooms where passion and struggle meet. It grows in the Graves of our comrades and theyre fed by the tears we shed for them. But love blooms all the same.
