A surgical team at the Dr. Luis Razetti University Hospital in Barcelona, Anzoátegui, Venezuela, successfully removed a massive ovarian tumor weighing over 25 kilograms from a 52-year-old woman. The patient had been living with the tumor for more than seven years before undergoing the procedure. The complex surgery, which lasted about an hour, was led by the hospital’s director, Yajaira Venales, along with deputy director Dr. Yinny Cayamo, and included anesthesiologists Jesús Caraballo and Antonio Villarroel, as well as postgraduate surgical residents. The tumor measured 116 centimeters in circumference and its removal required both a salpingo-oophorectomy and a total abdominal hysterectomy to fully resolve the medical condition. Despite the procedure’s complexity, it was completed without significant complications or major blood loss. This case represents the second instance of a giant tumor successfully removed by the Razetti Hospital team, demonstrating their growing expertise in handling high-risk, complex surgeries. Giant ovarian tumors can develop over many years, often going untreated due to limited access to specialized medical care or the silent progression of the disease. Removing such tumors is critical to prevent severe health risks, including organ compression, intense pain, digestive or respiratory issues, and even life-threatening complications. The patient is currently under medical supervision and recovering, marking the closure of a medical struggle that lasted more than seven years.
