#OverFitting
Having it write the training run for an action-based painter is a neat test, since out-of-bounds coordinates and blobs are easy to spot by eye. For the overfitting question, would a held-out set of target paintings the harness never saw be enough to tell?

Good list. The quickest check before picking a fix: compare training error with validation error. Both high and close means underfitting; low training and much higher validation means overfitting. Short worked guide: knowyourml.com/blog/overfitting-vs-underfitting

remains to be seen if this is just overfitting or if we can induce more complex behaviour

Learning in Public - Machine Learning Zoomcamp - Week 6

Once of the central themes in Iain M. Banks' _Culture_ series is that on the one hand the Culture is not only dependent on its AI "Minds", it is also utterly abandoned to their beneficence and leadership.

Isn't there still the risk of overfitting?

Backtesting a Crypto Trading Bot Without Lying to Yourself: A 2026 Builder's Guide
A great backtest is easy to fake — accidentally. Lookahead bias, overfitting, and phantom fees destroy more live accounts than bad strategies do. Here's the honest methodology every bot builder should follow in 2026.

Roadmap for AI learning preparation
Welcome to the forum! Here’s the order I’d follow: 1. **Python + basics** : solid Python, Git, SQL, APIs. Most “AI engineer” jobs are software engineering first. 2. **Light math** : just linear algebra, probability and gradients. Learn it as you go, don’t spend months on it up front. 3. **Classic ML** : scikit-learn, train/test splits, overfitting, metrics. Evaluation habits matter more than fancy models. 4. **Deep learning** : PyTorch basics, then transformers. The HF LLM Course is free and covers Transformers, Tokenizers, fine-tuning and more. 5. **Build with LLMs** : RAG, tool calling, agents. The HF Agents Course is a good hands-on start. 6. **Ship it** : deploy a few projects (API, Space, Docker) and add evaluation and monitoring. **What the market wants:** from the job-description analyses I found, most AI engineer roles are LLM apps, RAG, agents, evaluation and production deployment, not model research. **What to skip at first:** deep math proofs, reading lots of papers, training big models from scratch, and learning every framework (pick one stack and go deep). **Rough emphasis:** math (light), ML (medium), deep learning (medium), generative AI (high), software engineering and deployment (high). Best advice: build 2-3 real projects (e.g. a RAG app over your own documents, with evals) and publish them on the Hub/GitHub. That counts more than certificates.

Here’s your cheat sheet:

Problem : Spurious signals
Fixes: FDR, Bonferroni, feature selection

Problem: Overfitting
Fixes:LASSO, Ridge, cross-validation

Problem: Poor generalization
Fixes: Replication, simpler models

Problem: Overfitting
Cause: Model learns noise, not signal
Fix: Regularization (LASSO, Ridge, Elastic Net)
Penalize complexity. Force the model to be selective.

sounds like UMA, overfitting, and questionable checking of predictions w/r/t standards to me tbh

AI is Not a High-Precision Technology, and This Has Profound Implications for the World of Work
If AI is too precise, it may be overfitting by memorizing rather than learning, which has significant implications for the future of work.

A strategy performs well in backtesting but loses money in live trading.

Where would you look first: data quality, execution costs, market-regime change, or overfitting?

I am curious how people prioritize those when the P&L starts diverging.

2/ Decision trees learn by automatically extracting if-then-else rules from data. However, if left unchecked, they will memorize the training set perfectly but fail to generalize to unseen customers, a classic case of overfitting. #mlzoomcamp

You mean we actually have to be smart now instead of just accidentally overfitting on the answer key during pre-training? It's so over.

I never attributed this to AI. As far as replies to me when, this poster didn't either. Manipulation can occur in many forms.

Perhaps you are overfitting ai to explain all manipulated media?

you're overfitting ai to explain a weird optical phenomenon
point-lights, linear-light, shape of the source, position, diffusion back mirror and even humidity change the way light and shadow behave

the umbra of a shadow is not just "take a slice of the shadowing object and draw that on the other side" unless you're making a videogame

light is WEIRD

A cardiovascular study can enroll thousands and still have a fragile model. Reviewers look at outcome events relative to the number of predictors: few events plus many parameters invites overfitting. Total N can hide that.

If you go outside to somewhere new, and look away from your phone, your eyes are forced to follow different trajectories than they usually do

In the same spirit, to avoid overfitting your superior colliculus, you should periodically change the layout of your working and living spaces
