A perk about car free grocery shopping is not overbuying
January 22, 2025 at 4:35 AM
Lately I’ve been having a lot of weird moments of anxiety, making bizarre impulse purchases, overbuying groceries — I realized the looming tariff chaos is triggering some “what did I wish I’d known before COVID lockdowns”latent-trauma area of my brain.
This feels a lot like that early period of Covid when some people were shouting about how bad it was going to be while guys like Trump and Musk were predicting it would be over by April.
Not a single international cargo ship at the Port of Seattle. The port is dead. The last ship from China will dock at a West coast port on the 29th, and the last Chinese ship will dock on the East coast around May 10th. After that, there will be no more shipments arriving from China. We’re screwed.

ADHD is just repeatedly overbuying specific things because you retained the initial mental note that you were running low but didn't store the more recent mental note that you'd fulfilled the task.

No - just stop with that BS. THAT is what makes for shortages. Selfish people overbuying.

Yay to Past Me for overbuying GS cookies, since I just had a couple peanut butter tagalongs.

It's been a fucking day.

I've literally been overbuying tech the last year and a half under the assumption that prices are going to skyrocket.

Looks like I made the right call.

Let’s get some shit straight.

I don’t have a buying problem.

I have an overbuying problem.

There weren’t really that many American food products that I bought habitually but I do notice that my “anything but US” initiative has overall made me more conscious of overbuying and less prone to adding unhealthy or unnecessary items to my cart.

Unsurprisingly, stockpiling petrol at home is not a good idea.

I subscribe to a bunch of finance newsletters (because y’know, crime) and they were calling BS two years ago. Combo of the mini-Targets failing and Walgreen’s overbuying local pharmacies and having to close a bunch.

Well 'fortunately,' my understanding is China is sitting on a substantial reserve, having been overbuying for the past year or so.

But while the PLAN has been pushing itself to operate in the Indian Ocean, I'd be surprised if their logistics could handle the operation long-term.

We've been piece-by-piece overbuying things like toilet paper, peanut butter, pancake mix, just anything non-perishable that we figure we don't want to be caught short on.

Pancakes do cheer a person. My groceries were low, but there’s always the dry pantry! And due to my Covid overbuying, I still had lots of maple syrup!

We’re overbuying now in expectation of rising prices/supply chain disruption

These principles are great for people who don't have ADHD as well, obvs. My spouse operates with a dozen daily alarms and intricate systems. I don't have that same challenge, but this type of organizing makes my life much easier, too. Helps me get over resistance to starting tasks and overbuying
