I had to use Overleaf recently, really makes me excited for the quarto collaborative editor…

Yes, thanks for the plug Paul!

LibrePaper is still pretty new, but IMHO it's already very competitive with overleaf. And everything is totally free, with none of the "advanced" features behind a paywall.

Let me know if you try it and run into issues. I'm eager to improve the site!

I have an interesting case: I recently had to work in Latex using the online editor Overleaf. The grammar checker was giving me an awful lot of errors Word seemed to be fine with. After mousing over the 50th or so of these I got a new error: You have used up your generative AI quota. Excuse me WTF?

Me: *sends collaborator an increasingly confused string of overleaf comments on her proposal draft*

Also me, realising confusion and fogginess not confined to overleaf: *takes temperature - 101.2F*

Me: *emails collaborator to ignore comments on draft*

AND THEIR ERROR MESSAGES MAKE SENSE.

Which ngl, Overleaf used to struggle with.

Book day (Week 12 Part 1): I've decided 1000 words is my absolute minimum for a book day. We just barely squeaked by but I'm still very exhausted from the weekend, so I'll take it. Also I'm not sure if Overleaf counts equations in words, but there were a lot of those today.

Put another way: if I use Overleaf to cowrite a math paper, my collabs and I do not have any fear that Overleaf will see our partially written results, hosted on its own servers, and then complete the paper and claim credit or even co-credit. If I prompt ChatGPT or Claude, I do.

9 times out of 10 an overleaf error will be caused by something on the line above what the error message actually points to. And it’s almost always something tiny like a misplaced bracket!
October 27, 2026 at 4:18 PM
oh has it! 😒 I've not used Overleaf in ages. Wrote my MRes thesis in it, then started a PhD in a group where nothing other than Word was allowed.

Isn’t that what LaTeX and Overleaf are for?
October 28, 2026 at 12:42 AM
Overleaf sucks! They are imo a net negative on the LaTeX ecosystem now. It's sad that such a long-standing open source piece of software has now mostly been captured by a corporation

Overleafってローカルフォルダをワーキングディレクトリにできたりしないのかな

Do you all realize that if you make changes to an Overleaf file offline and then push them back via Git, those changes are tracked as long as Overleaf is in reviewing mode?

Se nota que está reventando la burbuja de la IA porque me acaba de llegar un correo de Prism (el editor de Latex de OpenAI) de que lo cierran en enero (tuve que usar ese para el tfm porque overleaf se quejaba de memoria de compilación)

Whenever I see this point, I know there’s nothing to gain by engaging with that person. It’s so disingenuous. Everyone knows the difference between these new data centers and the old ones.

IMO this is my own writing just as surely as if I were typing into Overleaf from the start. I mainly do this because it helps me consolidate my understanding, which emerges more quickly and more top-down than the old way. /x

Do you use social networks? Search engines? Google Docs? Overleaf? Video recording services? YouTube? etc., etc.?

Data centers didn't spring out of the earth last week. Where was all this concern then?
