January 11, 1897: After finding little, 70 Egyptian workers are sent by Grenfell & Hunt to excavate a trash heap near Oxyrhynchus. They immediately found a fragment of the Gospel of Thomas & 1000s more papyri, proving trash heaps are archaeological treasures. oxyrhynchus.web.ox.ac.uk/waste-paper-...

This is just so cool. A Roman-era mummy recently excavated in Egypt contained a fragment of papyrus with a section of the Iliad.

The Epstein files are turning into one of those accidental historical archives of preserved records like the Oxyrhynchus Papyri Manuscript (fragments from 32BC–640AD found in an Egyptian rubbish dump). But instead of shopping lists, bills and horoscopes it’s the elite manipulating the system.
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

March 23, 283 CE: A baby named Pichime is born at 6 am in Oxyrhynchus in Roman Egypt. This is his horoscope. His sun is in Aries and moon in Cancer (P. Oxy. 12 1564: papyri.info/hgv/21930). At the end, the astrologer says Εὖ Τύχη ("Good Luck!") to the little Aries. 🐏🦀 www.slam.org/collection/o....

I mean, we should all take some Homer with us to the afterlife, just in case we need a little epic reading while cruising on the Styx.

For #EndangeredSpeciesDay, a type of shark I had no idea existed until very recently: the daggernose shark (Carcharhinus oxyrhynchus). This is a super weird, poorly known requiem shark that is Critically Endangered. I'm not sure if it's ever been photographed alive/underwater

I don’t see much good news nowadays, but this discovery has me *grinning*.

An Egyptian mummy was found with THE ILIAD on its abdomen. Not some religious scripture, but Homer’s epic poem.

It dates from from Egypt’s Roman period, so roughly sixteen centuries ago.

There's still something like 200 year's worth of untranslated oxyrhynchus papyri at present rates of translation in Oxford.

Kudos to Oxford's Bodleian Library, for putting the Oxyrhynchus papyri online with expansive licenses permitting quick image-use. 🎉😍

They also automated it, so you can easily obtain high-resolution files.
